Advice on buying an Imprezza?

don;t forget a new set of tyres possibly every 15000 miles or less, and brake pads and disks.
I had new tyres (£480) at 12500 miles, and need new front pads soon (£100 ish). Disks to follow in a few thousand miles.
It all adds up.

By as new as you can afford.
Watch out for MY98's (not sure about 97's with this prob) as they get piston slap and need a new short motor. I think Subaru covers this with all MY98's but I'm not if there is a qualification period. But even so a new short motor is something I could'nt be fagged with even if it was inder warranty.
I've only WRX's (not STI's or 22b's etc) as this is prett much all that is available in Australia.

Don't forget that generally Scoobs are very reliable. Bloke who worked at garage we bought ours from has an Impreza Turbo which he raced and that'd done 150,000 miles plus.
Ours is a MY97 (P), with 76,000 miles on it and we have never had a problem with it. If we were to sell it, it would be worth circa £10,500.
I would say don't let the mileage put you off to much, and buy as new as you can afford.

WE've got a 94 WRX, had it for 18 months now
and never looked back. It's a phenomenal car
to own and drive.Basically we bought what we could afford, admittedly it's not cheap to run but you don't get a scoobs to whinge about running costs.....
The only advice is to check out how much on insurance 1st as that sometimes can be the deciding factor.

Impreza's (the correct spelling 
) are pretty expensive cars to run, fuel will cost you an arm and a leg along with insurance, you havnt said how old you are or what area you live in ie NE england, the more no claims you have the slightly better off you will be, you have to remember that these cars HAVE to be serviced every 6 months or 7.5k miles which ever comes first, service costs can range from 100 pounds to over 400 for a major with belt changes.
Economy is one thing that Impreza's aint built for, 20-25mpg is what you will be looking at for sensible driving, mid teens for more enthusiastic
They will cost you alot of money to run, look for atleast 200 quid per month in fuel and jap imports only run on super unleaded fuel, its not reccommended to run them on unleaded as this can and does in quite a few cases destroys the engine.
If you can afford 400 quid per month on fuel and running costs, then buy one, if not then its not going to be nice having a car thats sitting on your path doing nothing

Agree with TonyBurns
If you can only afford a 6K Impreza, make damn sure you can actually afford to run it, they are very pricey - it won't be like running a Mundano / Vauxhall etc.
But they are a great car and very reliable, I have 62K on my MY98 and (after a short engine for piston slap under warranty) have had nothing go wrong with it.

I would really like to buy as new an Imprezza WRX as possible as soon as possible for between 6 to 10 Grand!
If anyone can give me any help or advice then I would really appreciate this..Things that will make me buy one and the down sides!

Advice. If buying an older model 93 - 97....check that the synchromesh is in good nick (especially 2nd - 1st).
They usually all have heat sheild rattles when changing down gears (this is a trait we learn to live with).
Watch for clutch judder (when cold).
Thats all I can think of at the mooment. A god indication of what to watch out for is to got to the DRIVETRAIN forum and look at the topics that come up the most.
All in all they are a quite reliable car and an awesome driving experience

Mines an MY94...60,000 miles on the clock. ITs got a slight synchromesh problem that I can live with as its not getting any worse.
Dont let adverse comments affect what you want. Theres 5000 members on this board and some of them have dramas with their cars. But no single car is going to suffer from every problem listed. Every car ever made has its problems, but if you have a problem with a scoob this is a good place to come to get some initial advice.

Bought mine (cheap??!!) 2 1/2 yrs ago with 85K on. Now 105K. Have had to get new rear discs, and the 90K service. Other than that no problems except a tiny oil leak (which is a pain, cos it drips onto the exhaust and stinks). Servicing is not cheap. I have got mine done by Subaru, but am now considering going elsewhere...don't think the F'S'SH is worth that much more than FSH at high miles! Insurance will kill you if you are young or in a dodgy area. Parts can be much cheaper if non Subaru dealer, but if anything major goes it is lots of ££££.
90K service was nearly £600, (but is cambelt change as well).
High milers are v cheap now. What to look for..FSH, No accident damage, new tyres/no uneven tyre wear, make sure there is no smoke, no clutch judder (mine was bad when I got it, but soon got much better...I think it is how you drive it??!!), oil leaks (timebelt seals and power steering reservoir seal).
lucky if you get 24mpg.

I only take mine out at the weekends lol!! but ive done 10k in the 10 months of ownership so i know how much they cost to run but it is fun do drive but not alot of people can run 2 cars and be happy (ahhh company van for you ) servicing will still cost you at 6 monthly intervals if you appriciate your car and fuel....... only the best sul for me please

Try going from a 80bhp diesel van to an impreza, ahhhhhhh what a change

I'm 21 and have 3 years NCB... my insurance will be £1600 which I didn't think was too bad for someone of my age...
I have a list I have put together of recommended insurance companies, If you want me to send you a copy (or anyone else out there) I can send you one on Tuesday (I'm not at my pooter til then)
