On my '96 Impreza WRX import my offside front wheel breaks traction and spins under low revs, also there is a whining noise and the car will hold itself still on an incline without being in gear.

Anyone got any ideas what it might be? My mate seems to think it's a front diff/gearbox but we are a little stumped.
