Default Bugeye turbo heat shield

Has anyone removed the heat shield surrounding the turbo permanently? or if removed will it cause problems to the area its in due to the heat, i know it sounds like a stupid question but a guy i know is in the process of doing it to his classic, my turbo is getting changed next week just wondering wether to put it back on after!
