Had a little nick going into 5th while up revs. So put in synthetic oil this week. Only to make it start crunching while accelarating above 60mph and changing into 5th Any advice

Unhappy

my MY01 WRX also crunches going into 5th (only don 4,50 miles) at med to high revs, guess it's the syncromesh not spinning up the gears quick enough.

Is this a known fault anyone ?

Had the same problem with mine and it was when the car was brand new.
Took the car to David Hendry cars and they replaced the syncro and now it does it in fourth.

Apparently it is a known fault but not one that subaru want to own up on.

I have also seen this on an STi 5 from nearly brand new which turned out just to be a loose nut in the gearbox (which is apparently a common problem).

So if you're lucky, this is what it is.

Well i'm currently without my scoob as guess what, it's in for 5th gear syncro!!! Only a problem changing 4th to 5th over 5000 rpm but as its still got warranty thought i'd get it done. Apparantly its a very common fault with v5's.

Question

Gixerman, my MY01 WRX does exactly the same, high revs from 4th to 5th crunches, loer revs OK.
Should I approach the dealer to sort, what response did you get from yours, it sounds like they accepted the fault ?

Is it an official known fault within Subaru, eg, technical advisery sent to all dealers from Subaru technical deparment sort of thing...?

cheers

My scooby is a jap import so obviously subaru UK wouldn't be involved with it. I got a 'bought in' warranty with the car when i bought it and this covers the gearbox work.

Having talked to many pr-bugeye car owners this fault does seem to be quite common.

Hope you get it sorted soon
