Hi, ive had a issue with battery acid spilt in the engine bay today.

I presumed it was a duff battery and have ordered a gel battery as a replacement as it has made a mess of my tarty engine bay.

However i finally got my head in gear and decided to check alternator output later on. Im getting 15.2 v output across battery regardless of engine revs, so it appears that although rectifier is working to some degree it is over charging.

The car in question is a year 2000 v6 classic. Now heres where i get a bit confused. On having a search for replacement alternator i checked the code of alternator currently fitted and its a 23700 aa420. These appear to be used on the later newages, which use smart charging. I had presumed it should have been the normal late classic three pin alternator (23700 aa430) where smart charging is not used to my knowledge?

Now either its been replaced previously incorrectly or do very late classics use smart charging?

Hoping somebody can help enlighten me so i can order correct replacement.

Well fitted a 23700-aa370 today which is a 23700-aa430 equivelant and all is well again. Charging at 14.2v.

Guess someone had changed alternator before with wrong model.
