I`ve had my handbrake assembly literally explode this morning
I`ve ordered shoes £98 plus VAT
. Also had to order discs and pads (needed doing anyway) £189 On top of that I also need 2 ABS rings and I`ve been quoted £260 odd...wtf? I`ve seen what they are and I`m not paying that and I`m running out of money!!! My question is, can anyone recommend a good breaker or does anyone on here break Scoobys? Thanks for any help

HI Steve
Thanks for your order for the discs and pads
sorry I didn't have the shoes to supply you , I could get them relined for you for about £30 as the material on them is very thin but would take a couple of days to do if you can cope without your car. but will be a lot cheaper
Whats the matter with your ABS rings , have they been damaged by the exploding shoes ? this can be a fairly big job to do as the hub flanges need removing as the ABS rings are fitted on the back of them , this could lead to the bearings coming apart which then means new bearings
I dont have any ABS rings but I'm sure you could get them off a breaker
Cheers Ian

and from the sounds of it there`s not much left to reline lol!Yes mate the shoes going bang has wrecked them unfortunately. The garage said about the bearings too. I priced up a pair of complete units but they were £150 a side
so it`ll be cheaper to get the rings (if I can find some) and a set of bearings.....nightmare
of couse they can as they are simply bolted to the back of the hub (presuming yours is an earlier car as the later ones are presed onto the shaft end)
more likely that people dont want to split the hub as its then no use and will goose good bearings to split

Have you tried breakers yet? Grade A are good, or Google "Subaru Breakers" and you'll get a few hits.
For bearings, I'd look on www.yell.com under "bearings", ring round, I got mine for £160 a PAIR. Good quality SKF bearings too.

Yeah you`re right mate. Spoke the garage who`s gonna be doing the work and he said it`s bollox, otherwise whenever you needed bearings you`d need the rings too and that would be mental. They just can`t be arsed splitting the hub like you said.

its not so much they cant be ar%ed, as to the fact if split they will then have a hub which needs new bearings as opposed to one they can sell immediately..........

Update.
Ended up getting a complete pair of used hub assemblies for £258! The handbrake shoes I was given were the wrong ones
luckily the ones on the hubs were fine (£46 refund coming my way
). I now have a working handbrake and the rear brake pads and discs fitted. All that for £70 labour too.
**Thanks again to Ian at Godspeed for a fast and efficient service getting the discs and pads to me quickly and at a good price
**
All in all, over the last few months between this and the new coilovers it`s cost me around £1200
Now I`m broke

Hi Steve
Good to hear your now sorted , if you have the complete hubs , you can also sell your backplates off them to an early type R owner , these cars have the larger diff , 190mm handbrake , but only come with one pot calipers , the 2 pot rears won't fit on at all , but with your spare backplates they can then fit the 2 pots on , they got to be worth something to somebody
Cheers Ian
