typr r brakes
I have a type r that will be used mainly as a track car. Are the standard 4 pot calipers something that is worth working with for a track car or not? Seen that the Godspeed kit is based on them, but mine are rubbish at the moment, with new (standard) discs, braided hoses and racing fluid. Might be air in the system etc, but don't really want to spend time trying to improve them if they are just not up to scratch...

HI
What pads are you using , as these are the most important part to get them working well , after then checking that all the pistons are free to move , as siezed or sticking pistons is a big problem now with these calipers.
If you do have a caliper problem , we can supply you anything from a piston to fully reconditioned calipers.
I have a Type R rally car running the standard sized discs and calipers , and they stop very well .
Cheers Ian

In short, no. For a track car I would always go with decent calipers and decent discs.
Brembos' from a newer STi work very well with PF discs or a full AP Racing kit is also very good.

fight! fight!
thanks for the input gents. I am not sure what pads are on it, they were supposed to be racing pads but the braking is abysmal at the mo. Gonna try to get this car track ready for as little money as possible (yeah right) so will try to retain the original calipers, refurb and get new discs and pads if necessary. that should still work out significantly cheaper than a whole new kit. can still blame my rubbish lap times on the brakes this way too...

they can be made to work with the right components, we were always stuck with these on the gpN cars, however like all things if you have the budget then gigger will be better...........

It seems as though we don't know what we are talking about Alyn
only probably have 40 years experience between us !!
Bob , If you want to come across as the brake expert on here , at least get your facts right.
I have rallied a Type R Impreza for the last 2 years , last but one rally I had a first overall against a Millington engined Darrian , so YES the standard Subaru 4 pot calipers CAN be made to work very well.
If your brakes are not up to scratch on the track , I doubt very much they have race pads fitted , as this will make a massive difference to how they perform , and again , have a check on the pistons , the more of these sticking or siezed , the worse it will be.
Cheers Ian

The requirements of a rally car restricted by regs is very different to recommending what brakes work well on a car used mainly on track.
Good luck to anyone using/recommending 294mm single piece discs and Subaru 4 Pot Calipers on a track car. Have tried it myself and they are barely good enough on the road let alone for the track.
As you're not restricted to GrpN regs, fit something that will do the job well and get you lapping a lot quicker.
If Ian as the self-professed "brake specialist" is recommending that standard sized discs and standard Subaru 4 Pot calipers is the way to go for a track car, then that must be right and people are wasting their time and money with Brembo/AP/PF etc setups - either that or there is some really poor advice being given out.
I'll say it again, for a track car, fit better calipers and discs.
If you want to take Ians' advice, give it a go and see how you get on. Feel free to call us on 01462 488244 when you find his recommended track setup isn't adequate and you need some proper advice.
Do it right once and save yourself the cost/hassle of doing it again.
Been there, done that and got the T-Shirt.

My car is not restricted by Gp N regs as its out of homologation , I run the standard sized discs and calipers as I also do gravel rallies so run on 15" wheels.
Your short sharp incorrect reply of ' no ' was wrong in that the standard stuff can be made to work , yes bigger is always better when it comes to brakes , but the OP wasn't asking that , he was asking can the standard calipers be made to work , which the answer is yes.
Perhaps you should put as much effort and thought into actually answering the question instead of bitching
