3 or 4 wires is O2/lambda, 1 or 2 wires is EGT/cat-on-fire.

on a 96 the lamba is up top by the turbo, you can see it when under the bonnet mate.egt is just behind on down the down pipe and as stated 3/4 wies means it the lamba and 2 wires is egt and that is wires going to the sensor.

its a little confusing as i have been told the hole near the cat on the uppipe is lambda?? so thats wrong? its just that the new cat uppipe has two holes for sensors the one further back has been blanked, so the egt one is defo the other one?

Sounds like you actually mean the downpipe there, as classic up-pipes never had cats, and would be too short to fit 2 sensors on. The lambda will be the one near the top, between cat and turbo, and the EGT will be the blanked one, at bottom near join with center-pipe.
