Well the cars been back on the road for about two weeks after changing the gearbox. I've gone and damaged another one, oops. Little crunchy into first and second and wont go into fourth at high revs. Quite frustrating as the car is running standard power, PPG is rather expensive and i've read reports of people still stripping gears.

Does anyone have any info on making stronger boxes possibly making 1st and 2nd stronger as I enjoy launching the car from time to time

Im on the hunt for a TY754 gearbox casing if anyone has one or possibly a working gearbox with box code TY754VN1AA or TY754VN4AA if the price is right.

 

Oh gutted for you fella. I would this thread in the drivetrain section. An option is to change 1st and 2nd gears for PPG's. Have you checked the clutch fluid oil? Perhaps the clutch isn't disengaging.

 

Im going to give it a look over this weekend, need to change the manifold gaskets anyways. I dont think its the clutch though unfortunatly as there was plenty of fluid 2 weeks ago when I changed the box

Would a 5 speed out of the Hawkeye 2.5 be an option? They're meant to be pretty strong for a 5 speed but not in the 6 speed/ PPG price range

 

Been looking at those merv, need to find more details on the fitting of them and ratios but that could be an option.

Got a gearset for cheap so may make a box and change it for now, but im running standard uk power cough 200 cough bhp lol and i've just gone through two boxes in about 3 weeks, somethings not right

 

What oil are you using??

 

I bust my old uk box and had it replaced with a newage box. Supposed to be a bit a strong.

An STI box is stronger than the WRX/UK boxes and may be a better option for you. you just need to sort out the rear diff to match.

If you're feelng flush, scoobyclinic have just delevoped there own gear kit and are stronger again than the PPG's, Not cheap, around £2.5K though

 

Pretty sure i've put 75w90 in, that should be fine shouldn't it ?


Yea Dan I was reading the info on that the other night, for the power im running though I really cant warrant that sort of money at the moment. I went from the classic gearbox to the 2004 wrx gearbox. Maybe i'll keep my eyes peeled for a box and diff from an sti, i've changed the box once its actually quite an easy job if you take your time.

 

to run your power and have 2 boxes go in a short space of time you must be doing something wrong in either driving or fitting ... or that the box you bought had been thrashed

if buying a new box i would make sure you know what miles etc.. it has done and as said the sti box is good bet with a good oil like motul

 

Well the first box was the factory fitted box and had been a little ropey for some time. I did break it when I launched the car it pulled off and it wouldn't go into second. The other box was from a genuine subaru specialist or so called, the box was off his own car and the box was smooth at first until again I launched the car and it popped out of first. The box still works in all gears just 1st and second isn't quite right.

Reading that back, that sounds like my driving but surely they are built to take it being awd

What during the fitting may cause problems? I was suprised at how seemless it all went.

 

When you say launched, what rev's are you going too???

 

Uprated clutch?

 

I thinks it down to the fact that he is launching with 18" wheels.

Theres an Exedy Clutch in there which is slightly uprated compared to the standard clutch.

 

if your going to launch it as stated 18 wheels not the best and if you do drive like that im sure you will go through more unless you get an uprated box like ppg or 6 speed etc.. as the 5 speed standard boxes are not strong enough to take the abuse

I dont drive everywhere like that, the car is treated with respect, that other box was maybe the 2nd time I had done it. Just seems mad that it cant take a little bit of abuse.

Na im good with my own car thank you this is just a little hiccup, this one is only the box and it all still runs fine so it will do me for now whilst I look into it all

 

did you fully bleed the clutch as not doing this properly will lead to exactly what has happened to your gearbox, gears feel very notchy when going in or maybe wont go in at all maybe even lots of grinding when engaging, properly bleeding the clutch should really help you, you need to physically push the air out of the cylinder as just pumping the clutch pedal wont get all the air out although the clutch pedal will feel fine
