Default Cutting Out

Hello

I've got a 93 WRX import and have been having an intermitent problem recently. Occasionally when I pull up to a junction the engine will just die and i'll have to restart it. Also sometimes when i'm accelarating it will loose all power, I think from the engine cutting out again, and then will come back to life after a few seconds.
I thought this may have been the fuel pump cutting it so have replaced with a Walbro but still got the same problem.
I'm mechanically competent and unable to afford to get a garage to analyse the fault so hoping someone here might recognise the symptoms.

Thanks very much in advance for your help, already asked loads of questions and you guys have been a great help so far with my first scoob
Jonny

edit: Forgot to say mods that I know of are K&N induction kit and full decat exhaust, and the walbro mentioned above

Think I'd be looking at the MAF and for splits in your induction pipework first.

Since you're in Poole have you tried Triton on the Hurn industrial estate as they do specialise in Imprezas.

Splits in the pipe work ,as suggested, would be a good place to start looking.
Are the connectors on the fuel pump ok as they do tend to corrode.

Agree with MAF it might be possible to clean it using electrical contact cleaner from Maplins, be careful

Do you find it looses power when you doing full throttle, as you've done a decat your more than likely over boosting.

Thanks for the replys guys
The loss of power can happen at any amount of throttle. It is usually after I have slowed down for a junction or roundabout, then if it didn't cut out there it might do 20m down the road. It's more a total loss of drive than just being down on power. This happens after driving it off boost for most of the journey, so unlikely to be over boost? Has also happened under full throttle a couple of times with similar symptoms, although that was in 3rd or 4th gear.

Just thought I'd make it a bit clearer as this is quite intermitent at the moment. Apart from last Sunday where it happened 4 or 5 times within 5 minutes it usually only happens maybe 2 or 3 times a week, and I drive around 20 miles a day. This obviously makes it a bit of a ******* to diagnose as you need to leave it a week before you know whether or not the last "fix" has worked

Will have a good look around the induction hosing to see if I can spot any splits. Did clean the MAF with carburettor cleaner around 3 weeks back as was filthy, but didn't help.
The connections seemed ok on the fuel pump, and before I put the seats back in I never heard it cutting out, but can't be sure as the problem only occured once in that period.

Thanks again for all your help
Jonny

Hi, i have a 1998 uk model which is doing exactly the same thing. Some days absolutely fine, but other times it will cut out when idle or whilst driving. Usually you go to put your foot down and there seems to be no power at all then about 1-2 seconds later it comes back to life and your off again. Other times it will cut out while driving and wont start again so have to pull over and restart on the key.

I have standard air box and dv, but with a full stainless system with fast flow sports cat, and i think previous owner took the cats away from the exhaust manifolds? Not to sure aboout this!!!!

Any advice would be usefull as i have my son in the car alot and obviously dont want the car cutting out where it shouldnt.

Regards

Russell

Dynamo check for splits/loose clips in the induction pipes as suggested could even by your dump valve sticking
Possible lambda sensor sensor, throttle position sensor, idle speed control valve problem
