Just noticed when checking the levels that the gearbox hardly shows on the dipstick.

Two questions.

1. Should it be checked hot or cold.
2. Does anybody know what the standard subaru make and type of oil is .. my dealer is shut today and I don't want to mix oils.

Can anybody please help.

If the level is that low I would drain the rest and re-fill.
Drain plug is in the middle and may have a magnet on the inside to catch the nasty ferrous bits and stop them flying around. Re-fill with Castrol "Syntrax" from Halfords through the dipstick hole (3.5 ltrs. or 4ltrs. for later cars)
It`s an easy enough job.

Thanks for the reply ... I haven't got the tools for doing a change and as it has had two new clutches in the past 3 months I don't want to risk any more problems. I just need to top it up until I can contact the dealer. The car is a MY00. Is the Castrol "Syntrax" used by the dealers do you Know ?

I doubt if the dealers use "Syntrax" but I (and quite a lot of guys here) found it to be a good oil for the Scoob box (improved the synchro performance considerably)
I was wondering why the oil level had dropped - there`s only two places for it to go? leak out or through the oil seal and into the clutch housing or perhaps they lost some when they removed the box to do the clutch! Have you had the juddery clutch syndrome?

Go for Motul Gear300 75w/90 GL-5. I used Castrol before but Motul is fine a and everything is a bit smooter now.

 

I've got juddery clutch syndrome - had it for around a year now (93wrx done nearly 90K miles) - hasn't got any worse thank god but I'm thinking it needs replacing.

One thing I know is it can't handle 2nd gear properly if I dunk the clutch a bit early after I've raced through first gear ! Lots of slip like. Funny how it hasn't got any worse though. I'd have expected it to have been game over by now !

 

Syntrax done it for me... best £40 I've spent in a long time

 

I paid my £40 at Halfrauds yesterday evening, and changed the gearbox oil to Syntrax.

The old oil (MY98 - dunno when it was last changed - if ever) was a fairly grimy colour.

The difference was not as significant for me as some of you guys have reported. It sounds a slightly quieter drive, but the synchro performance has not improved by very much (still have to change gear slowish to avoid any notching).

I can tell something has changed, and it was worth the money for me as it makes me feel like the box is well protected.

 

James, have you got a quickshift as I beleive that MY had trouble with the Qiuickshift beating the Synchro.

Syntrax works fine for me but IMHO Motul Gear300 is much better and I'll keep use it for the rest of my Impreza's life.

Cheers for all the advice. Used syntrax to get me by and it is ok to mix. Gearbox had a loose bolt where it was leaking from !
