cannot help, but when i changed my gear oil recently i instantly got a notchier throw and then began getting a snick in 4th which becomes a crunch when the oil gets warm. I'm pressuming that the old oil(30k miles old) must have been masking a problem that was already there.

bumped, im having the exact problem the OP had although i use Castrol syntrax. Most the time i have to put in neutral, release clutch, press clutch put in reverse.

It doesnt crunch, just feels like it physically wont go into reverse

any ideas?

Reverse is like that from what i know. I have had my 2003 WRX from new and it has always been like it. Either roll forward slightly and it will go in, or try going into 4th first, then going into reverse. Gear oil wont change this, they are a pain, period.
I had Silkolene Silktran in the gearbox but for me Castrol Syntrax gives a better change of gear for me. I noticed a definate difference.
