Ok, I'm a complete Muppet when it comes to the mechanics but what tools do I need to swap over the std MY99 backbox for an STI one?

I suppose I could ask a local garage to swap it over, but I've been told it's a 10min job.

Does the car need to be up on a proper ramp or can I use Axle stands?

Axle stands. Given you have a jack capable of it, jack up the back end using the rear diff & then put axle stands in the usual place. Then, it's a 14mm (I think!) spanner job (two preferably - one to undo, the other to make sure the whole kaboodle doesn't just twist!). Make sure you have a washing up liquid of your choice to stick into round the rubber bits

Well, I didn't either. And then I came across 3 seperate places - all who are scoob pros - who jacked it up there. There's even a photo for some ad in a magazine that does it!
The one I'm a little less convinced about is the spot under the point - rather close to the sump - which apparently is also OK... Not one to get wrong, though

 

Just a small point but when I did mine I spent time and effort getting the box off of the rubbers, the easiest method is to remove the box, still attached to the rubbers from the hangers mounted to the car - so much easier. Use plenty of WD40...

 

Thanks guys. There's a local garage that's done some good work for "cash" in the past. I phoned them this afternoon and the offered to fit it for a tenner if I'm struggling.

I'd like to try it myself first, but we'll see tomorrorw when I borrow my m8s jack/axle stands.
