Newage STI's are not WRX's

not 100% sure if the 2.5 WRX's have them but I dont think they do.

Thanks for that info - my main reason for asking is that I have a JDM 2002 WRX, Bug eye NB-R and I have found the original sales bumf - it states it has a " 2.0 Boxer DOHC 16 valve AVCS Turbo" engine.

Was AVCS added to this as a "special"

Good question mate,

great if they have been added, I was going to fit some in mine but it meant splicing the loom etc, for roughly the same price I'm just having my WRX ones ported.

I guess it has to be good thing, I'm not too tech minded when it comes to headwork - is that the polishing and porting route you are doing ?

overall, including the 2.5 STI block, forged rods pistons etc, about 500bhp

will have to get a turbo and FMIC to match though, they are in the pipeline, my funds are getting quite low at the moment though.

I thought the same mate, but i kept pushing and pushing, eventually the engine blew up, the car has been off the road for almost a year now

Taken me this long to save up for the parts, then I started getting paranoid thinking that parts that I wasn't intending to uprate might fail so I uprated them too.

before long I found that I could have bought a decent newage STI for the price of the rebuild

looks like me and the Subaru have to spend the rest of time together

The NB-R was a a bit of a hybrid

Lots of STi bits (mostly suspension) on a Bugeye WRX. As it has the Bugeye ECU I'm not sure it could cope with AVCS

A bit of a rare beast and I can't remember who had one on here !

I had such bad luck with it though, I was having a heated debate with the other half, mid argument I changed from 4th to 1st instead of 3rd and blew the gearbox up!!!....clearly her fault. Anyway I though I would use the opportunity to put a 6 speed box in, which I did I then re-kindled my love for the car after a nice remap and decided to completely change the outside by getting carbon bits and a full respray on my way back from the paint shop some lad in a Civic Type R thought he would have a try, stupid kid... I thought and down went the foot.....10 seconds later a rod shot through the top of the block......been off the road since.

This is the worst bit, i've had to drive the missus bloody Kia Picanto!!!!

I'm the envy of OAP's everywhere

Rally Fan 555, I've found a bit of info on your car, looks like the AVCS was fitted as standard on it lucky git.

[edit] Japan-Spec
[edit] Rev. A (2000)
August 2000 brings the 2001MY WRX NB sedan. It has an EJ205 with AVCS coupled with an MHI TD04L turbocharger. The engine produces 250 PS (184 kW) at 6000 rpm with 34 kg·m (333 N·m) at 3600 rpm. The wheels are 16-inch (410 mm) in diameter. The car uses 2 pot/1 pot front and rear brakes. The front brake rotors are ventilated while the rear are solid disks. It has a torsen rear LSD and a 4.44 final drive ratio. The transmission has close-ratio gears unique to Subaru of Japan at that point in time. The car has a curb weight of 1,340 kg (2,954 lb).

[edit] Rev. B (2001)
The 2002MY WRX NB sedan debuts on September 2001. The mechanical specifications are similar to the previous year's model but the curb weight has been increased to 1,350 kg (2,976 lb).

[edit] Rev. C (2002)
The WRX NB-R sedan is released on November 2002. The power and torque ratings are the same as the previous year. The wheel diameters are increased to 17" in size. The rear brake rotor is changed to a ventilated disk, leaving the car to use only ventilated disks for braking. The car has 4 pot/2 pot front and rear brakes. The rear wing is on wing risers. The car now weighs 1,361 kg (3,000 lb).

not good news! and yes clearly her fault! lol scoobs are wicked cars when they are working. i always grinned after driving mine. altho just a T200 with the basic mods i hit 252 on the rollers. i despratly want a re-map but its the dredded 97 spec ecu so its expence! i completed the engine change to have put downs like the previous owner said they bodged the wood ruff key with liquid metal, and now its p1ssing oil from the oil return pipe all over the turbo and smoking like a beyatch! after takign it off to find a small split about 1mm in the end of it, i put it back on with a better clamp thinking it would be ok (as the clamps higher than the split) WRONG! i think putting it on again made the split bigger which is causing the prob. i bit the bullet and bought a brand new 1 from the stealers for £10.50 (*******!) and going to fit it tomorrow. it better be ok after this or im going to burn it!! as u prob know its prob the most tw@ttish of pipes to get to!

hope yours works out mate.. 500 bhp is a thing of dreams for me atm! i just wanna drive my scoob not my 85bhp work van!

The 2.5 WRX does indeed have AVCS heads. They are AVCS on the inlet only.

They are also believed to be better or bigger power due to slightly higher compression ratio but its negligable.

I have just bought a 2006 2.5 WRX engine for that very reason. They also have shimless buckets which means you can run a higher rev limit.

I'll only be using the cases themselves as I shall be replacing cams, springs valves and retainers for a combination of cosworth and supertech items.

Will be using a front Mounted GT35R with reverse inlet and these heads on a strengthened 2.5 Engine. Aiming for circa 600bhp when its all bolted together.

These heads are a very good base for any build but you will need bespoke ecu and extensive mapping work.

I was under the impression that ALL JDM Bugeye WRX's had AVCS and that that is what gave them the higher output (247bhp) than the UK cars (217bhp). I used to have one and it was significantly quicker than a standard UK Bugeye WRX.

Cheers for that Shaun - I had her from the Midlands, I think the previous owner went by the name "Captain Caveman" on here

I wonder if the AVCS will make mapping a prolem as it's a future plan for me

Si.
