£4000 Subaru Track Car?

Default £4000 Subaru Track Car?

Hi all..... since driving an sti ppp and absolutely falling in love with the performance and handling and having enjoyed a good thrash around a track many times i thought the time has come to buy a track car. I have 4000-5000 to spend on a track car but am unsure about which model and year to go for. I have seen a RB5 for this sort of money but do i go for a newer wrx possibly................. i am undecided. Power is not a priority but standing up to a good thrashing is key in my decision. Do i ensure i get an STi or would a normal wrx surfice......Please help! ddadangerous

early sti type ra, stick an oil cooler, uprated disks and pads, set of decent gauges to keep an eye on things and jobs a fish.

as far as reliability, guy i know bought one to use the shell from, 3 years on, 30 or so trackdays and the engine finaly blew, and that was wit trying to kill it lol

I sold a WRX RA to a mate 2 years ago and it finally gave out after 3 laps at rallyday last Saturday....big ends.

When i owned it, it was only slightly modded running about 290bhp. I done a fair few trackdays in it and he continued to do so, so considering the life it had IMO it didnt do to bad and it was running on a stock engine. For the last 18 months it was running 360bhp and was ragged within an inch of its life everytime it went on track.

I think it is pot luck to whether it blows or not, the car had less than 50k on the clock. I know a guy who's UK wagon has 160k on the clock and has done more trackdays than you can shake a stick it.

Yeah go for the Sti!

Most engine failures it seems are due to the owners rather than the engines. Clearly. however thrashing any engine is going to make it go boom!

Whichever model you decide upon correct preparation is key the car's survival/mechanical well-being. First thing would be uprated oil pump be it a Cosworth or a RCM item (and I would go with a High Volume/Pressure setup) and at the same time I would also fit a Sump Baffle as they only cost about 150+vat and you would have no problem fitting it yourself and it could be an engine saver. I would also install a fuel swirl pot, I believe Alan Jeffery (EngineTuner.com) and Zen offer a swirl pot setup.
If you want to do it yourself then SARD do a really nice swirl pot with internal pump. Used to have one on my hill climb car and it was a really neat solution (http://sardracing.com/fuelcollectortank.aspx)

Personally I would try to budget for doing the above mods immediately as they could save you a lot of grief/additional expense in the long run.

Thanks for all your help guys....seems type ra is the one to go for......any mods unless easy would have to done by mechanic but the oil is the one thing that needs addressing. So 4 grand on the car and the rest on mods......what could be done with 500-1000?
