PlayStation 3 Slim Announced
New playstation 3, more compact and tidier than previous version.
120GB @ $299 (£249) with an additional 250GB version on the way
Joystiq
Presumably, what the original PS3 should've looked like.

The only thing that interests me in all of that is the iPlayer is coming to the Playstation. Playing content through the Television from BBC's vast array available on iPlayer is great assuming that it isn't some cut down version.

Not sure about that matt look tbh and doesnt look so much smaller. Would be easier to keep clean than the standard PS3 lol. But glad I didnt hold off buying one about a yr ago as there was rumour of the slim version then.

With the PS3 there is no app so to speak, you just browse to iplayer website and watch that way.

Not aestheticaly pleasing on the eye as the original, I agree with some of the commenst above, it does look cheap and tacky now, cheaper materials being used I guess, still it never stopped anyone buying a 360 did it.
(bought en-masse, but ugly!)cheap(er) materials are fine, so long as it's reliable and bits don't start dropping off it. If that means they can knock £xx off the price, I'm all for it.
the cell processor inside it is now 45nm, consumes 34% less power, and dissipates less heat.
this is what the PS3 should have been from day one. Microsoft got more design decisions right - especially hardware architecture, and so caught up with, and overtook Sony*

That would look quite neat tucked out of view in the tv cabinet, if GT5 is worth me upgrading my DVD player for a Bluray player (justification to the wife..)
Xbox360 has consistently outsold PS3, so go figure! Throw in the fact Sony LOSES a considerable chunk of money on every PS3 sold and you can understand why they were desperate to get the cheaper, crappier built "SLIM" to market. You could say they took a leaf out of Microsoft's book
This is a good point, although a flawed one, as if the machine looks as cheap and nasty as a 360, then the price should match the 360 as well, and i do believe the ps3 has a more premium price attached, even with the new discount.
Oh my god, SONY still ISN'T making any profit on the PS3 Slim!!
Speaking to the UK's Times Online during last week's GamesCom event, Sony boss Kaz Hirai provided some insight into the ramifications following the introduction of the smaller, cheaper PS3 Slim. Hirai noted that while the system itself would be sold at a loss, it would be buoyed by other elements of the PlayStation platform.
"If you look at the growth of the installed base, it is slower than the PS2 was but it's pretty much on track with the growth that we had with the original PlayStation," Hirai said. Responding to the issue of selling the redesigned PS3 at a loss, Hirai explained, "I don't actually know that that's the true nature of the business that we're all in, whether it's PlayStation, Xbox or the Wii. I think the better indicator is to look at the business as a whole platform, to ask: are you profitable in terms of the hardware, software and peripherals. And the answer to that question is yes on a gross profit level since the last fiscal year."
