Tried repairing mine, but the alloy its made from is really crappy, ended up replacing the lot, iirc cost me about £180 , carefully drill out the heads of the studs , its then quite easy , i used normal studs for the new one not the ones supplied for future ease of removal .

If its like a Peugeot one I've done you need the key in it an in a special position to release a couple of tabs which will prevent it coming out. Often there is a marker on the face (like you have 1,2,3 for aux, ignition and start) sometimes an arrow to mark this position. Of course it may be totally different but worth looking into.

The usual Subaru "key kit" (their term for a lock set) includes the entire ignition switch assembly - as kingmikey says you don't take the barrel out of the lock, you take the entire thing off the steering column by drilling out two security shear bolts. Are you sure you haven't got this option?

When I wanted to change mine (MY98) Subaru quoted nearly £600 for the lock set and reprogramming of the transponders - hence I went another route.

I have a MY93 lockset for sale BTW - door locks, boot lock and ignition barrel + 1 key for £50 +p&p if you are interested

the barrel does split from the main unit iirc. not sure if can be done in situ though as there is a security tab in the barrel which is push in by the column.
i took the complete unit fo the steering column very easily. use a tiny drill to drill a hole in the top of each bolt, off centre. then use a dot punch or imilar to turn the bolts.
My key was getting stuck too so i took the unit part and filed the levers slightly where they were worn and the key is perfect again :-)

So if I take the whole steering lock off of the column I should be able to remove the lock barrel ?

its a doddle removing the igntion barrell.
its held onto the column by snap bolts.

BUT,if you have the key it just comes out when you insert the key and it can be removed easily when the lug is pushed in
