Default Induction Kits - Vanity over Sanity?

Hey guys!

As my name suggests, I own a 05 wrx and while i dont want to do any real engine mods im all for sound! Already changed the backbox for a nice little number, and i've been umming and aring about putting and induction kit on for some nice turbo spool noise.... however a few ppl have heavily advised me NOT to put an I.K on a newage.... Is there any real reason for this? I'm only after the noise - not any performance!

Can anyone suggest a good / safe induction kit?

Cheers guys
Will

K&N Typhoon Short Ram,

Looks good and sounds great. induction kits are not recommended on classics due to crap MAF's, Newage are fine. Have been running the K&N for 2yrs, no probs.

Remap should be done to rescale the MAF and to smooth out any surge you may get.

ahhhh AWESOME! how essential is the remap? they're not cheap :P is it something that could wait a few months without any damage?

I read on iwsti that most aftermarket induction kits need a remap, something to do with the scaling of the MAF sensor. If this is not done then the MAF reads the airflow wrong and so the mixture will go lean at points where you really dont want it lean. Going to lean on a turbo engine can melt stuff.

You could go for a free-flowing panel filter. That increases the noise and I think you can get away with not having a re-map.

I believe on classics it is the oil coated air filters that killed MAF's. I've been running a Pipercross foam filter for 3 years with no problems (crosses fingers - jinxed it now)

You can remove the resonator from the airbox to give the same noise, Do a search and you'll find guides.

I drove for around 4 months with the induction kit fitted before my remap and it didnt do any harm.
