Default Transfer data from one sdcard to another-how -please ?

My son has the same make of sat nav in his car as mine, a Garmin. On mine I have an sd card that has the 2009 maps on it for the UK, my son's has the much older version.
Can I transfer the data from the card in my sat nav onto the card in his sat nav to up-date his maps ?
If so ..how. ??
I have a macbook laptop, OS 10.4.11. I have a card read/writer gadget usb2.0 mac compatible.
I have no idea what to do though so some step by step instruction would be very much appreciated.
Thanks.

I've had a quick search and found this.

Looks like it cannot be done. Well that's not strictly true. You CAN copy over the data from your card to your son's but it will not work as Garmin protects the data and when you insert the other card into the unit it will tell you the maps are locked.
