Hello guys,

i recently bought a 94 impreza wrx estate,and noticed that when reversing the rear wheels judder and sound like they are allso skidding a bit,but it seems fine in forward gears,,i havnt got a clue what this is and would be gratefull for any help solving the problem.

mine does exactly the same.its a 1993.auto wagon

It sounds like the brake shoes in the drums are catching when reversing. If the shoes are worn on the leading edge, causng the adjusters to take up the slack, the trailing edge could be catching whilst you are reversing.

 

hi.i have a mate who owns a 01 bug-eye like mine and he had a very simular problem but his was the front wheels and when going forward/back when turning tightly.he described just as you do (skidding).unfortunatley it turned out to be his front diff playing up although the garage he got it from did sort it for him after some discussion.i hope this helps and i hope its not the diff in your case,there a bit pricey!

 

Thinking about it when it happend the other day as i pulled away there was a bad screeching noise coming from the back brakes,,when i stoped and pulled the handbrake up and pulled away again it had stoped,,so i will start by changing the rear shoes and see if that cures the problem,,i hope so i dont fancy getting the rear diff changed

That does point it more to the brake shoes. Hope it is only the brake shoes.
