Question whats your oil temps?

anyone with gauges defi etc.. what are your oil temps showing? from what i've seen mine has gone to a maximum of 113degC & curious whats a dangerous level on our cars? that was done doing motorway driving too.

ps. not sure if the versions make a difference but mine is a v7 (bugeye) sti. with some nice mods inc fmic running 345bhp.

any info on this would be much appreciated i'm considering putting an oil cooler if need be & if i can find room to fit it?

113 is danergously high, if that was just sat on the motorway then somthings a miss at a guess (unless you were giving it large). also bear in mind that if it was pushing it the oil temp will tend to slightly increses when you back off before droppign back down again.

when i saw 105 in mine i backed off it hit about 110 max and had an uprated oil cooler fitted 3 weeks later.

Hi Tidgy, i wasn't giving large just doing a nice steady speed on the motorway but when i do back off the temps do drop down to around 100degC - did the uprated oil cooler make much of a difference?

That is bad, if you're not giving it teddy when its at 113 then check tuning/AF readings, oil quality/level etc, air leaks, etc, etc - I wonder what your EGT's are at? Where is the reading being taken from? No 3 cylinder?

Mine (although now runs cooler thermo) used to run at about 95-98 deg on motorway cruise and when really pushing upto about 110 but normally 105 and EGT's 860-890 ish. I'm running 1.8 bar on Garrett hybrid and 800 cc injectors so lots of power with standard rad.

it usually (giving it some on motor way speeds) is 100/105 & goes close to 110 when its hot day so i ease it a bit then the temp does drop. I got the figures from the defi gauges as its got a function to see the maximum you've hit & mine was past 110 around 113. not sure if they are 100% accurate or really dangerously high? what would be really dangerous?? 120?? also i'm wondering if an uprated oil cooler would drop them figures down some so i can stop worrying

If its upto 110 when pushing and hot, I'd not worry. I've had 115 before when belting around for ages and I've heard others having 125 (although i'd be backing off before then). If you were light motorway driving with 110, I'd get things checked but if she's near 98 then don't worry - just make sure expansion tank level is correct, maybe fit higher pressure cap and a lower temp thermo....does the job for alot less money than oil cooler.

Mine's about that now but with colder therm...

Ps No probs Timur.
Also, oil viscosity can increase or decrease oil temps (and pressures), dont run on really thin fully syn.

i am yet to see over 95 dgerees since having the oil cooler fitted, even with larger turbo and higher boost since then.

so yep made a big difference to temps.

do you know what oil's in it?

Cheers Tidgy, mine has the standard WRX STI turbo & max boost is around 1.6bar. The oil in the engine is Millers fully synt about 4k miles old.

o right, as long as its the right wieght then should be causing undue problems with only 4k on it, don't belive the manufacturers claims of 20k per oil change, but 4 k is well within life span.

at 1.6 bar your gonna be pushign the engine so might explain the additional heat, get it checked out and if alls ok then get an oil cooler with thermostatic control and you'll solve the issue. thing to bear in mind is all engines run differently and some run hotter than others.

A few things to bear in mind before rushing into fitting a cooler:

The older the oil (even the best) to hotter it will run, as it loses it's ability to 'control' temperature ie degrades.

Having low oil level will also result in higher temps, as the oil's having to work harder.

Defi's do tend to read higher, which is no bad thing really..

Temp sender location can make a huge difference, especially at high speed where a sump based sender will read quite a bit lower than near turbo above cyl 3..!

If you fit a cooler bear in mind that come oil change you also need to drain the cooler and associated pipework then re-prime it all again on refill. Depending where your cooler is fitted this varies from a pita to a real PITA..!

Finally, as already said grade/viscosity of oil matters too- the second number is what matters BTW not the first.. therefore if you're running a 10w40 try a 10w50 and see if that helps.

FWIW, on my 350ish (45k) newage wrx (which generally run around 10c hotter than classic for some reason..?) running c1.6bar VF35 my defi oil temp (cyl #3) sits around 93c on a fast 85+ m/way cruise rising to just over 100, which 102 is the highest I've seen c140mph quick blast. Motul 300v 10w40 every 5k. I only ever fill/keep it half way between min-max on the dipstick btw..
