I need some help.

I have a 2006 uk STI and am looking at the possibilities in tuning or selling and buying the likes of a 3yr old RS4, 335d or FQ 360

Current I have a back box and centre pipe and an xpt map. I don’t have an idea what it makes, but I’m assuming around the 320 bhp mark.

If I was to keep my car, I would want to modify it properly and therefore I have been doing some research. I would want to make it worth my while so therefore would want to go to at least 400bhp.

I have hunted around bulletin boards and on Google and from what I understand I would essentially need a bigger turbo, injectors, boost controller and also forged pistons + map.

The accessories I can probably deal with as i'm semi technical and have most tools, but the thing that worries me is the pistons. I cannot seem to find out how much this would cost, how complicated it is and who can do it.

If anyone has the experience and time, I would really appreciate a definitive list of what I would need and what it could give me. For example, I don’t really understand the different types of boost controller, etc. I can then price it all up and compare it to the depreciation on a new car, etc, etc.

BTW, I live in the south east.

Andy Forrests guide gives a pretty realistic of costs and parts requirements for the 2.5 STi.
I've more or less matched this spec with my STi - see My Garage for spec list.

The 400 hp mark is the point where things do get expensive if longevity is needed.
Below that level needs far fewer parts and the engine doesn't need opening up.

I have looked at Andy's excellent web site before and it is starting to make more sence everytime I look at it.

I'm going to ask a friend who builds race cars for a living how much he would charge to change the pistons in my car, but does anyone have any ballpoint figures on cost?

Also, can anyone recomend a good mapper in the south east?
