A lot of folk have kittens about alternators, and cover them up when washing engine bays. Our view is different - in many cars they get soaked in very wet driving conditions anyway, so why not carefully wet wash them? When we do engine bays, they get sprayed and brushed with a suitable engine degreaser, and then rinsed at low pressure using hot water. The engine is then started and dried out (uding it's own heat and towels for the upper surfaces), plus I sometimes also use a leaf blower to speed up the process and thoroughly dry out sensitive areas like belts, coil pack recesses and the alternator, etc. As long as you are sensible, and avoid high pressure cleaning and the of caustic chemicals you should be fine. If you want to go further, you could always get it chromed afterwards lol; speak to Type-R Pete on the SIDC forums for more advice, as his looks lovely!
