Spend £5k of my money
I've come to the conclusion that having a car to use for trackdays and as a
2nd car/family runabout is not practical for me. Therefore I want you guys to recommend how I can spend £5k buying a car to be used on the track only. its going to be kept off the road, no tax mot insurance etc..
I've got my heart set on a classic and prices on fleabay seem ridiculous to me atm around £3k gets a fairly well modded sti which leaves me with another 2k to spend on further enhancements for now with more money to spend slowly over the coming years.
I did like the look of this one (was on at £3k) before the owner took it off. Just to give you an idea.
DO NOT BID on eBay, also, Subaru, Cars, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 16-Apr-09 20:35:05 BST)
I'm not looking for massive power just yet, just something capable (350hp mark) with the ability to be modded for bigger power even if it means a new engine later on.
So whats a good base car to start with within budget?
Over to you guys.
Paul

Most track days require cars to be MOT'd and road legal, don't they?
For £5k I'd probably budget about £3k for an early STI - my immaculate v2 went for about that a few weeks ago. Allow £500 to sort any problems that show up after you've bought it - check the exhaust isn't too noisy, you don't want to get black flagged. That gives you £500 or so for basic breathing mods if they've not already been done, and another £1k or so for a remap (perhaps including an aftermarket ECU) so it doesn't blow up.
Your next mod after that should probably be brakes.

I've already modded my hawkeye after a few trackdays done brakes handling power etc but for reasons that I wont go in to on here its got to go. so I'm aware of what mods will need doing .
Do you reckon going for a classic thats not been touched too much rather than one thats already had a fair bit of work done?

You'll struggle to find a car that hasn't been modified in some way IMHO. Better to get one that's in as good a condition as you can find, and worry about what mods it does or doesn't have later. Much cheaper to buy a car that's already in good nick than fix one that isn't.
