Default Newbie needing advice

Hi Guys first of all i'm new so please take it easy with me.

I currently drive an Audi A4 TDI S-Line which i'm looking to sell for about 6k, The mrs currently has a mini copper which where also looking to sell for about £4500

Where then going to be looking for a scooby for about 6-7k or thats what where planning i'm wanting your advice now really

The scooby will be a daily driver for my girlfriend (she is only 21) and my son who's almost 2. I will have fun in it on a weekend and maybe do the odd track day. (insurance isn't really a problem as we have traders insurance.

I need advice on which spec, age etc i should be looking at? I've been in the motor trade for a few years but don't have a clue abour scoobys and they seems to be alot of models and specs etc

Also what should i look out for when looking for one

Any help please??????????

Hi mate, I was in the same position as yourselves, my wife is 23 and we have 2 young children, 9 months and nearly 3 years old. Bought a 95 WRX import and loving every minute of it (apart from a sensor going!) was worried about buying a 15 year old car but its low milage (46,000) and feels as good as the brand new cars i've bought in the past. Must admit tho it's not great on fuel and did get some, well alot of earache about the that so bought the wife a Punto for her and the kids and I use the scoob for work, everyone happy! 6-7k will see you in a mint classic facelift STI or a newage WRX, take a look on the usual classifieds, good luck.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think we would be after a new age scooby if thats what there called rither than a classic (even though i do love the look of the classics) It's just with the Mrs been the main user id want something that was realiable (not saying the classics arn't) we would be looking for something between 2001-2004

Had a quick look on piston heads and think we would want a WRX we don't want a non turbo

Here's a few i've been looking at

Subaru : subaru impreza uk 300 limited edition Whats the UK 300 is it special????????

Subaru : 2002 impreza wrx must be sold this one is sold but looks nice and was local(ish) to me so would of been nice and seems well priced to me

Subaru : PRODRIVE WRX SUBARU IMPREZA again prodrive whats this and is it worth the money

Just any advice really guys

I'm not really up to speed on all the impreza variations as a legacy driver, but I do know the prodrive ones will be more performance (handling) orientated so you might want to get the wife to give it a test drive she might find it too harsh.

Hi, and welcome!
Are you after the newest car for the money? I take it 2 door P1's and Type R's are a no no with the youngster?
At 7k, your into newage territory, which is a very good car. Or, you could get a mint V6 Sti for 6k.
Have you considered a wagon, for a bit more practicality?

Hi Mit P1's and R's won't really be considered where both young and with the baby in the car most of the time i don't really see the point in either of them for us plus the running and maintaining will be high i guess?

The STI's i'm not sure what they are but seem exspensive and again we don't want something thats going to be leathal on the roads.

I guess i've learnt abit already from just reading other people posts on here and think a WRX is best for us but now not sure what the different specs they do.

The Boss doesn't like the wagons so thats out the window aswell.

What should i look out for when buying a WRX

The ones with a "Prodrive" upgrade or "PPP" is a power upgrade which is warranty friendly as its fitted by Subaru. It gives around 40 extra bhp which would take a WRX to STI power, Newage anyhow.

The UK300's as far as i'm aware are a limited Edition WRX with PPP fitted.

Excuse the high jacking.
Im also in the market for an 02-05 imprezza turbo, but in ireland. So am lookin at the 10-13k mark (7-9 pounds ish i guess)

Is there any difference handling and running gear wise between the 02/03 bug eye and 03 newer model?

Are the 225bhp wrx's re-mapable to the 280-ish mark on 95 octane, to match the Jap imports or JDM spec ones?

Whats a realistic mpg to get on motorway drives 60-75mph?

Thanks, in advance, from another diesel VAG owner!

VAG diesel you say? well you can kiss your MPG goodbye for a start!

It's worth it though

Ye i know.
I'm at a stage in my life where i'm earning ok money, have low expenses, and reckon if there's ever a time, its now, before fuel prices sky rocket again!!

Its a new shape caddy re-mapped. I do a 160 mile drive twice a week, then its parked mon-fri. (commute from dublin to west of ire for work) and the caddy is prob doing only 35mpg at 70mph due to wind drag.

So if scoob could do 25-30 on long run i could easily live with that.

Other thing i meant to ask, the diff control switch, is that only on STI's when talkin about 03-05?

I have no idea about the DCCD switch as I drive a '98 legacy GTB which doesn't have one

You shouldn't notice too much of a difference in MPG then - I get about 30mph in the legacy at legal cruising speeds on the motorway and even super UL is cheaper than diesel. I run on LPG now though so get the equivalent of about 40-45mpg on the motorway

Was it dear to convert to LPG?
Does it still give same power and reliability? I though fuel would help cool an lube valves a bit compared to gas.

These are a limited edition WRX limited to 300.
The main differences are exterior and interior improvements such as Prodrive headlamps, Splitter, Prodrive spoiler, colour-coded skirts, white side markers, gold OZ rims, blue alcantara interior.

Think some they were fitted with PPP from the factory.

The gas is very cold in liquid form - not sure how cold it is by the time it is injected but I don't think it's any warmer then petrol. It is dry though so flashlube is recommended to keep the subaru valves lubricated. I paid under the odds and in the end got a top BRC system but it was a drawn out process.

It's all good now though. I save about a third on my fuel bills and power is still just as good - 276bhp standard on these motors

MPG in a standard Scoob can vary greatly depending on driving style and conditions.

I did a round trip of 265 miles on Tuesday and got 35mpg. All steady Motorway driving with an occasional blat past slower traffic

Around town I get between 24 and 26 mpg.

Mine is an 03 WRX blobeye. Only 'performance' Mod is a K&N Cone filter.

And its For Sale in a couple of weeks time

Thats sort of what i was hopping/expecting to hear.
Obviously if your feeling lively, the mpg's can dip into mid teens i guess, but when cruising at motorway speeds 35mpg seems great!

Its a blob eye that i'm looking for, its my favourite bar the 2-door, but i want something newer than them.

Is yours 225bhp or 265 standard?

I think with the way the VRT has gone here in Ireland it'll be best value to buy one already registered.
Government wants 8.5K euro to register a 05 wrx!!

MY05 is Model Year 05, The MY05+ sti's got the Dccd but previous Blobs did not have it. The 2005 Blobeye had a few changes made to previous Blobeyes, most obvious was the wider track and Dccd, the wheel PCD also increased due to the stronger hubs. AFAIK.
