I have set up my PC/PS3 so that I can stream stuff onto the PS3, but it is incredibly slow.

The pS3 is hardwired into the network via a 200MBPS Homeplug, and I am using Tversity as the media server on the PC (I was using Twonky, but changed to see if that was the problem).

All the folders come up quickly, I have no problem seeing the stuff, but when I try to access it, it takes an age to load anyhting. Video takes so long that I'm not sure it actually will start, I always give up.

I did think that it was Tversity transcoding, but I switched that option off and even for JPEGs which would require no transcoding it is dog slow.

When I took the 'copy' option on the PS3, it took about a minute to copy a 4mb JPEG from my PC to the PS3!

Any suggestions?

I thought there was no need for silly programs like tversity anymore? The PS3 and 360 have divx support so why are you using that?

 

So I don't have to use USB drives to play stuff. I want to keep a library on my PC (which has a more suitable amount of storage) that I can access from my PS3 without having to shift stuff to pen drives and such like to view them.

I don't have a PS3 but I'm sure you can just play your files on your PC via the PS3. Obviously some files types aren't supported but jpegs, divx and xvid Avi's etc are AFAIK. They certainly are on the 360 and I think the PS3 does it as well.

My PS3 just see's my Windows Media Player shares for Music, Video and Pictures. Works just fine with no need for other 3rd party apps or USB drives.

 

Oh yeah on the 360 I have to disable my firewall to allow sharing so keep that in mind. If anybody can help me on that front it would be good. I posted on here before but non of the brains replied. I'm using Nod32 so presume it cant be done.

 

Mmmm, WMP11 sees my Xbox but not my PS3, and the Xbox can't see the PC!!!!!

Do you have the homeplug plugged directly into a socket and not via 4-way adaptor etc??

 

You need a program to serve through the network (unless you are using a dedicated server)so the PS3/xbox can see the files though and WMP is probably the worst you can use. TwonkyMedia, TVersity and Nero Media are regarded as far superior not least because they can transcode a file on the fly.

Aye, they are all plugged into the sockets directly. I got the pass through ones for exactly that reason so I wouldn't lose sockets. They are running at about 190mbps according to the utlility that came with them.

Trying Nero Media Home at the mo, so if that isn't any good I try that, cheers!

I suspct that the problem is my PC tho, not the software or PS3 as the Xbox cannot see it either.

Oh I give up! Nero Media Home works brilliantly on the Xbox, but I still can't watch any video on the PS3 and loading photos takes an age.

It works fine for other people, why not me?!?!?!?

Have you got a Firewall running or some other Virus type software?

 

I had the same problem with my PS3 It was what I bought for in the first place and some BR movie watching , In the end I just gave up and sold it !
, and bought a dedicated BR player , So till something more suitable comes along I just watch films /programmes on my PC its not ideal but at least I have a 22 inch wide screen monitor.

I bought a NAS to allow all the PCs to store stuff and use as a print server, and it was dog slow copying files to it. I eventually traced it to having my network card set to 100mbps full duplex. Changed to auto detect and it went like **** through a goose.

Changed the PS3 to auto, et voila! Works like I expected it now! Very small delat of about 2 seconds when you choose a video, but then no stuttering. Photos are like reading off a USB device.

If you have sorted the streaming issue, disregard this, but all I did was follow the instructions on the link below, no additional programs required apart from Windows Media Player 11

All mine stream perfectly, wirelessly through my router (Belkin G Plus Mimo) and the PC they are stored on is at about the maximum range from the router.

I have given up the idea of saving avi's to USB dongle now.

Yeah, it's sorted thanks. As mentioned, I bought a 1TB NAS with Twonky Media installed on it and I'm streaming off that with 200mbps Homeplugs

HD video like it's on the Blu Ray on the PS3, sorted!

Which NAS did you buy mate? I run all my streaming through a mac using MediaConnect but a NAS would be better as I wouldn't have to have the mac switched on to play the files.

 

It was the Iomega Home Media Network Drive. Very simple to use indeed. Supports Mac OS X 10.3 or higher.

It also has a USB 2.0 slot, so I plugged my printer in to it and now everyone on the house can print too, which is a bonus.

Bang whatever sized HD in you want, connect to your TV away you go. Connect it to your router and use it to download torrents, host your own website etc etc cracking bit of hardware.

 

I looked at that, very impressive, but a bit too much dosh for me. However, it does play most media formats, so you don't have to re-encode, which is good.
