Mal K. When you get yours, you don't fancy meeting up to take me out in it do you?

If you mean the "chattering" sound, that can be achieved by running no DV, as long as you have a turbo that is amenable to it i.e. VF30 onwards or TD series. Would suggest that it's best to do this with a ECU that doesn't run a MAF though, as MAF based ECUs cause the car to shudder when you lift off suddenly as the MAF reads the air coming back through the system and chucks in more uneeded fuel.

My MY99 with a FMIC, induction kit and no dump valve sounds like what Jeremy Clarkson referred to as a Squirrel blender!

I thought it was compressor surge from some of the boost bouncing back through the turbine blades and missing the wastegate, rather than fuel?

Mine does it on certain maps, complete with MAF and DV. One of the 350bhp ST's on Sunday had chatter to a ridiculous degree and you could hear it for miles.

It's not good for the turbo btw.

I believe its described as compressor stall (pretty much as you outline though) But as I understand it, the judder is because the MAF is unable to distinguish between air going the right way vs. the wrong way and simply bungs fuel in when it is not needed. This is why when you go mafless, the effect disappears.

Modern VF turbos and the TD series will run no DV without issue. Early VFs are less robust and running without a DV is not advisable.
