Default New Focus RS or Second hand 911

As above. After reading Tom Fords review, I quite fancy the new RS.

Specced one up at £27,590 and can get one July/August. For that price I could get a 2003/4 996 C4S.

Ford Pro's:-
Brand new with 3 year warranty
Low running costs (no new tyres, brake pads/discs for a couple years)
Low volume production
Always been a Fast Ford fan

Ford Con's:-
It's still FWD

Porsche Pro's:-
It's a Porsche
4wd
Feel good factor

Porsche con's:-
Warranty at approx £1350 a year
It's 5 years old
Not that fast really. A Nissan 370Z will be just as fast
High running costs. Tyres won't be cheap. Neither disc's/pads etc

Will only be used as a weekend toy.

If you had to buy one with your own money, which would you go for and why?

Talk about fickle, you've spent the last 6 months slating the RS at every opportunity - why is it suddenly the right car for you after one review?

I would go RS btw, but then its fast and practical, I don't even fit in 996's.

I would agree with Cupra on this one.

I have about 280bhp and have done 3.5k since the last front tyres and they are over half worn now!! I don't spin the wheels much either, so that is purely from grip and ESP.

If it's a weekend toy I would sway towards the 911, the higher running costs are offset by decreased depreciation compared to the Focus RS.

Yes, that's because I owned the Mk1 RS, and didn't think Ford could get 300bhp to work in a FWD car.

After reading the review, they seam to have achieve it pretty well. Although I dare bet on wet roads it'll still be a handful to get off the line very quickly.

Yes, I still do think that 4WD would have been better.

Stilover.

I heard this from someone at Ford, who knows if they're telling the truth. Makes sense as I was quoted £14k on a Evo X.

1000 units per year I believe.

Audi S3 is likely to be 14/15k after 3 years so I agree the RS is at the very least likely to match that.

Stilover - you know where I'm going with this one .

Get yourself a 996TT and be done with it!

(10-ish weeks and I'll have mine )

Although, the review of the FRS in the Times did look very favourable and if this TT hadn't come up for sale, then I'd probably have had my deposit down ages ago for the Focus.

Don't be daft, course it doesn't.

You can actually get a 996TT for the same money, albeit about 9 years older with 70k miles on it.

As daft as it may seem, I was all for going to get the Focus (having had a MK1 RS before) until my mate decided he wanted to sell his TT to me.... I'm 40 in June and it's something I told myself to do before I hit that milestone.

I still wouldn't mind that Focus though (one day)

well i would be more impressed at the sight of a Focus RS on the road than a Porsche, just due to the rarity.

Porsche is probably the better car, but i would go for the RS myself!

I love both but would probably go for the Porsche, its an expensive car from the outset, not one built to a price and then upgraded, also, though I like the new RS Focus, its looks the business I am not sure if its not a bit too lairy looking for me nowadays.

If you are single and want ladies, I think a Porsche might help you wheras they may see a Focus RS not as a triumph of engineering and performance but a bazzed up Focus, aw, bless etc.

Yeah I know, I know......... a 911 Turbo all the way.

TBH though I compared the FRS with the 996 C4S because of price. A decent 996TT (low'ish milage) is another £5-10k. The only thing that is putting me off the 996TT is the warranty issue.

£1350 a year (or there abouts) and Porsche stop issuing warranties for cars over a certain age. With something that is an all out Supercar, a major problem could be financial ruin.

As much as I really want the FRS, my head says `No`. I would only have it as a weekend only car, as I just don't want to go back to £50 a week just getting to work and back. Reason why I bought a Diesel Golf. Now, is the FRS special enough to use as a weekend only car? Hmmm, I don't know. Being a FWD hatch, and as I drive a FWD hatch every day, would it be the right choice? I don't know.

Other car's I've thought about is a second hand Cayman S or a new Nissan 370Z (£29k approx and 326bhp. On paper it's quicker than the FRS)

I'm calling into the Ford dealer wednesday night. Hopefully a couple more reviews are out by then, and if he can do a deal then I might get the FRS and swap the Golf for something else.

Pull the fit bird's with class in the Porsche. Pull the Chav easy girls in the FRS.

Hmmm, easy ****, or inteligent conversation? It's a tough one................

Focus RS it is then.

stilover - You bought a diesel Golf because £50 a week getting to work and back was too much, and then you are talking about spanking 25k+ on a weekend car......or have I got the wrong end of the stick???

Stilover,

the 996 C4S is a lot quicker than it may get credit for (it just won't feel that quick).

Porsche's are deceptively quick compared to their power output and the driver experience.

Of course for your £27k you could just about get a vanilla 997 C2, they have crossed the £30k barrier now and I think they will be right in the zone.

I wouldn't go for the 911. I easily spanked a mate in his 2WD 911 when I was in my Spec C. Whilst the 2 cars aren't in the same league quality wise, I'd want a bit more poke in order to see off Scoob drivers GT3 for a bit more £'s?

FRS is a great looking car & no doubt will go like the wind ... you'll need to be a rich man though to stomach the depreciation of a brand new one.

I just think that Subarus and Spec Cs are easier for mortals to drive than 2WD 911s. Although having said that something like a 993 or even 996 is probably on a par. The 997 spanked the Spec C around the 'ring

With similar quality drivers the 911 would do better.

So it all depends on what you want from your car as most of us are mere mortals and we will be slower in our 911s

If I wanted an all out point to point fast car, then (not including a 911 Turbo) I'd by an Evo FQ360.

Driving a Porsche, whether it's a standard 911, or GT3/2 is going to feel far more special than driving a Hot hatch or Sports Saloon. Feel good factor will take away the fact that a Spec C or Evo can get to point B 30 seconds quicker.

I think as said above, an Impreza/Evo will be fast is most peoples hands compared to a rear engined 911. Same as the Focus RS. I know that on a back road I'd be faster in the Focus than a 911. As in the Porsche it'll be constantly on your mind that if the rear end goes, it has a lot of weight hanging out over the rear.

But in time, once learnt how to drive the 911 properly, I think the driving experience will be far more rewarding. That's why.........

After seeing 5th Gear last night, I've decided NOT to go for the FRS. Just not special enough for a weekend toy. And I think I'd always be driving it wishing it had 4WD.

Although I change my mind as quick as the weather, so by tonight I'll have probably ordered one.

^^ We're all different of course, IMHO though a "standard" 911 wouldn't float my boat for reason outlined above. A GT3 on the other hand

Nah, no birds in the FRS, just loads of shaven headed blokes in rally jackets chatting you up
