Default VAG Gearbox Problem

My brother in law has a Golf GT TDi 130 with the 6 speed gearbox and last night he lost 1st & 2nd gear!

Is there a known issue with these gearboxes or does anyone have any idea as to what might be wrong?

It's not the clutch as if I select any gear other than 1st or 2nd the clutch bites strongly and can stall the engine easily, no sign of it slipping previously either.

Just feels like there is no resistance going into 1st or 2nd, wondering if it's a linkage or possibly a selector fork in the box?

Any help or advice welcome...

Just a thought....
