I know its not a Scoobie, BUT will it get to this with our cars soon?

My neighbour has just rolled up in a flash Mitsi FTO - he says that it HAS got to have a trakker fitted to get insurance?? I didnt go into too much detail but what would everyone here think of being FORCED to fit a Tracking Device??

(Jen using Chris' computer)

Already has - direct line and Tesco both require trackers...but then ours only costs us £9 as month...

Don't mind if it works out cheaper than other policies, and it's an added peace of mind

Privilege didn't insist on one when I took out my policy in July 01.

Some do some dont, Tescos do and told me they dont quote on imprezas without one.

Plenty of places that just require a CAT 1 or CAT 2.

It is very likely that to get a decent price on cover for a new Scoob that a tracker will be required - the majority of major underwriters in this field are going down this path.

I have a Direct Line policy, no tracker required. Must depend where you live.

Maybe RUM has more info about this, but I have it from a very good source (my insurance company, doh) that a tracker kind of device will soon be mandatory for all cars costing more than xxx UKP.

And I think they have a point to be honest

Theo

PS: my Subaru dealer had his 3rd visit from thieves. This YEAR ! Of course, he lives in the middle of nowhere (not even on most maps )

Question

DJ140 - bizarre..we don't live in a high risk area (as far as I know! ).

Could it be something quite recent? We just started our policy at the end of Jan. Unless it's another thing for the under 25's

I think I'd want my stolen car back as well, I've become quite attached to him! (although if all that was left was a burnt out shell - maybe not...)

Hi,

Just got an RB5 and am with Direct Line insurance - a tracker was compulsory - the reason i was told - i am under 26 and i have no experience of high performance cars !

Not too sure how a tracker helps me with my performance cars skills ??

When I had my RB5 Privelege said No tracker = No insurance.

The P1 had them fitted as standard and most insurance companies need to see proof that the Trackstar is still being used.

Sad indictment on the situation today.

WHo remembers the RB5 stolen from Donnington, it was reported that the thieves ripped the interior out trying to find the tracker device to remove it ( assumption made by the owner ).

pslewis,
Personally I think it would be an extremely good ideas if ALL the insurance companies insisted ALL Impreza Turbos, old and new, were fitted with tracking sytems before they would issue cover.

If all the thieving scum knew that every Impreza on the road was fitted with some form of tracking device then perhaps our cars, and more importantly our families and ourselves would be at less risk from being attacked for our cars.

Two friends of mine have been attacked like this within the last few months in my area. One attacked in his house, the other dragged from his car and his arm broken. Each time 3 attackers involved.

I wouldn't like my car back if it was stolen either, but if the liklehood of being attacked to steal it could be reduced, then that must be worthwhile.

The question is, would the insurance companies and the tracking companies try and exploit our fears by charging exorbitant fees!!

It appears to be a no win situation unfortunately. At least for the law abiding performance car driver.

Cheers MTR

Well having just parted with my FTO GPX for a Scoob MY98 i think you should change your insurer...
(aged 30 3yrs NCB living in Norfolk)

Mine was with Belldirect (a division of Norwich Union) had a Cobra Cat 1 but didnt need a tracker

Should we have to have a tracker? - no - i think people should be given a choice.

Wouldnt it be better if those cars requiring one to get insurance had one fitted as standard? then the cost can be effectively passed on when the car is resold

I would have one if i felt i would keep the car forever to get a return on my investment. But i know in a couple of years or less i will update to a new model

Direct Line insisted on one for my UK300 (30 years full NCD Rural) and as has been said Tesco insisted on one for my girlfriends RB5 (28 as before). It also had to be a particular type, ie one that lets the Tracker company know it's being moved without permission rather than those where you have to inform them it's gone.

Been on the phone all afternoon for quotes.
Cheapest was Frizzell(aka London & Victoria) I asked them why they didnt ask me about alarms/trackers...they said that it didnt matter as it had no effect on their quotes!

Couldn't believe it...and they were still the cheapest by a few hundred pounds!
