Default Sapphire Cosworth

I gave up smoking on new years eve, and am putting the money it used to cost me away in a seperate account.

Now if I keep it up for a year I should have enough to buy one of these (nearly) I have seen them going for around the £4k mark, will this buy me something half decent or all they all shagged by now?

The three door one would be nicer I know but they seem to be going for best part of £10k minimum.

Mate, they were all shagged by the year 2000

There are nice ones about, remember some have very chequered histories, they rot for fun and can cost a massive amount to get right, a slightly ratty four grand one on budget tyres with a smoky engine will cost six grand to sort out, do your research go to see a few, go to shows, join the forum (RSOC) and know them inside out before you even think about buying one. I havent had one but bought a ropey Fiat Coupe Turbo and regretted it, dont buy someone elses neglect, mistake or money pit, whilst you have the cash you are in charge, once its gone, its gone and you are stuck with a ratty old sierra and to be honest, icon or not they arent that good anymore, 204 bhp, ok rwd but you have to remember its basically seventies/eighties technology, safety etc, I, personally would be more inclined to think mid nineties M3 at that kind of money, obviously bearing in mind the same caveats.

Well done on the giving up smoking.

cheers.

I will join an owners club nearer the time, would much rather buy one from the there than ebay etc.

I just feel that if I don't own a Cosworth at some stage in my life then I will be hugely dissapointed, I vowed I would own one, one day, the only thing I fear is the "you should never meet your heros" thing. Will it be as good as I thought it would etc.

"you should never meet your heros"...I agree on that one,i sold my STI 3 Type R a few yrs back and had money burning a hole in my pocket..Anyway since i was young i always wanted a MK2 escort, found a mint Harrier on a ford site, went down there in my New BMW330d sport for a test drive..Well what can i say,the biggest pile of dogs muck sums it up...Had 5k in my pocket to buy it,but came home with it still there.Ended up buying a P1 and so much happier for it...Spoilt my dream car...Alan...

My uncle has had a few, back when they were new. He sold his last one last year with 26k on the clock. It was a late 4x4 on a J plate.

For some strange reason he kept it totally standard, but months before selling it decided to get it running 330bhp with a chip and new injectors etc. I felt seriously quick...I mean like a properly quick compared to Imprezas of similar power. But that was all in the power delivery which is mostly at the top of the revs in one big lump. So in reality it was about the same as an Impreza...but because of the way it felt, it was great fun to drive.

I'd recommend it after driving that...but then again, that's when the running costs were covered by my uncle's wallet. Lol one day he rolled it out the garage, and a spring broke just because it had moved. He did have it sitting in the garage for long periods of time without driving it, but they do like to rust anyway!

Buying a good one is like Russian Roulette..........I spent a fortune on one just as it came out of warranty...steering rack, bushes, shocks, exhaust camshaft snapped, discs warped, HT leads, distibutor gremlins......That was when it was new. By wisely or empty your wallet

I owned an Escort Cosworth for a year and was disappointed. The Cosworth bits were great but the Ford bits weren't. In 1998 the STI v3 I replaced it with was 25% better, if a percentage could describe a car overall. And that was 11 years ago.

I suppose I'd still really like to own an Integrale one day but in reality the moment has long past. Best just to buy the poster and watch the videos?

Sound advice, if you do want one, do your research well and know what to look for. They are a fun, raw car to drive though if you get a good one....they were compared to the E30 M3 as a real competitor for good reason.

This is mine

hi m8 be very careful what you buy ,they can become a money pit .cossies are getting on a bit now and i would only buy one thats been cherrished and treated like a baby with no expence spared .you wont get much for 4k so beware .there new shells in mothballs for 3 doors still around so you could have project opertunity here is my 1992 4x4 3door cossie ,the only one built in the uk £52,000 later

cheers geo

Its an icon. I have my car up for sale with a view to getting one.
As for spending money on it, I've spent nearly 2g on my Impreza in 3 month getting it the way I want it.

I believe 330bhp can be acheived for little money on a Cosworth (-31 actuator, chipped ECU, stainless exhaust, injectors) then spend the rest on what needs doing.

Lets be honest, Imprezas are like ar@eholes. Everyone has one, which kinda spoils the fun of having one although a million people cant be wrong........

I'm gonna buy one, run it and hopefully sell it for what I got it for.

How good would it feel when someone asks me what I do and what do I drive, to turn and say " I build fire engines and drive a Sierra Cosworth"

Haha. Nice car you have btw. I'm looking for a bugeye/early blobeye UK Sti. Only two things putting me off are the fact it's a WRX, and the mileage! Lovely car though

I paid £5250 for it over 10 years ago. What it is worth now, in today's climate, is open to debate....but ultimately what someone will pay - I would expect to have to pay 6k -> 7k to get one in similar condition ( and perhaps another 1k to get it how I wanted )

I've had about 4 of them a good few years back now . Great cars, but the rot just puts me off them these days. You will constantly be fighting with the Rot IMO. Huge fun and they are quick once lightly fettled with. But getting power down in a 2WD and pushing it in the twisties take some bottle.

I had a mint 2wd saph 330bhp at one point when I was still in my local subaru owners club, and went for a spirited drive on a local club meet, the cossie was a real handful to keep pace with the scoobs and they were not pushing half as hard as me. The power wasn't the problem, traction and handling was.

I was seriously into fords, and have utmost respect for the die hard purists still out there, but they should be left for what they are a piece of iconic history. There are so much better cars out there for the same money, and as some fella mentioned if you want some RWD action the old E36 M3's are great value for money at the moment.

Even in the current climate I think you will end up with a bit oproject for 4K. Last time I looked 6K gets a nice one, in good nick with rebuilt engine etc.

This grabbed my attention I've had mine for over 2 years now and it was the best thing I ever did I'd wanted one since I was a kid and up until I bought it I'd had 20-30 cars Mine was an almost standard 2 wheel drive with only minor modifications and low owners and mileage & loads of history It's now stage 3 on a T34 turbo and it's now 350bhp and it's a very quick car on the roads and it's a lot of fun to drive I know sometimes you shouldn't meet your heros and I thought the same after I drove a mark 2 RS2000 because I was disappointed by the lack of LSD but the 2 wheel drive Cosworth won't disappoint unless it's a real dog.

Here is mine

There are only 2 cars I would sell it for, a Skyline GTR or a 3 door Cosworth, I've found a 3 door for sale so it might go up for sale soon.

I would have liked an STi but I like the fact that STi owners see me in their mirrors then cant get away from me gives me a real buzz.

There isnt much that can keep with a 330bhp WRX round my area.

Yours looks a nice one Paul - sounds like you have similar car tastes to mine. I like the GTR as well. I like the E30 M3 as well but wouldn't trade my Sapphire for one....was trying to persuade the wife to take one on though as her car ( so I could borrow it occasionally )
Have you driven a 3-door by the way? - imo they drive a bit different as standard.
I know what you mean about the fun aspect though!

I always wanted an E30 M3 and I was after either one of those or a 4x4 Sapphire Cosworth when I bought an Integrale Although the Lancia was good fun I should have bought the M3 Last year I advertised my car to buy an E36 M3 as a track car and I had to change my mind once I drove mine again on test drive I couldn't go back on power now

I have driven a 3 door but it was a long time ago, one of my worries is that the 3 door looks great but mine does have a lot of power now and it's quite a handful so it'd feel like a step backwards.

Many people on Passionford claim that the Sapphire drives much nicer than the 3 door and the Sapphire is the nicest of the Cosworths to drive but I can't comment because it's been so long since I last drove one, the fact that I love my car to drive and it really makes me wonder about changing it for a 3 door says a lot though

As far as Cosworths go to use one daily you need a 4x4, for fun as a second car buy a 2 wheel drive if you can drive
