Question

How would they normally sell ex-police cars?

Needn't be a plain clothes car, it would have to hand it's uniform back before it resigned.

I once saw a police car at a petrol station, fully dressed including blue lights etc. Odd thing was that the actual constabulary emblem and the word "police" were crudely covered with black tape. Anyway, a fat bloke and his kid got out to pay for the petrol and some crips then buggered off in the direction of a local housing estate. I wondered if they bought it in an auction or something??

The ex-bacon mobiles may be high milers but they are rigorously serviced - there are meant to be some good bargains to be had! Still it would seem un-natural to give those buggers any money for anything without actually being hauled up in front of a magistrate

Normally ex-police cars are sold off at an auction IIRC

Boost...

Probably a mechanic from the local traffic garage, they are insured to drive the cars. Possibly out on a road test but dont know what he was doing with a kid in the car.

As for ex police cars they are normally stripped of their livery and sent back to the manufacturer. Most cars are sent to forces direct from the manufacturer and then brought up to police spec by the local traffic garage... Thats my understanding anyway!!

I went to the Chelmsford auction a while back and saw quit a few ex-jam sandwhich`s going real cheap. You could see where the sticky bits had been and the marks on the roof where the lights had been. The trade cowboys were lapping them up! "One careful owner,(the whole of the Essex police force!!) never abused, regularly seviced squire"

Going back to the orginal post I know the car in question - it is often parked in my road, where the owner's girlfriend lives. He is indeed a police officer, but the car is privately owned.
