Not been on here for a while after I sold my scooby but I'm in the market for another.

Been looking around and have seen some good bargains, probably due to the credit crunch.
I've set myself a budget of 8k, I'm out of the country a lot and although I could easily afford more for something special I've set myself an 8k budget because spending any more would be wasted really. Besides 8k seems to get some nice cars nowadays.

My dilema really is whether to get an 04/05 2.0L WRX or the newer 06 2.5L WRX, I've seen both for sale around the 8k mark and both look decent cars, but everyone I ask seems to have conflicting opinions and I'm not up to date with Subaru opinions and specs lately.

Advice and opinions greatly appreciated.

 

Is there any reason it has to be a WRX. Why not just use the money and buy a blobeye Sti. Best to start of with a best model your budget allows.

The only way you'll know for sure it to drive both. Both are reliable if properly looked after. The 2.5 does not have the distinctive burble, but that can be overcome with a different exhaust. The seats are grey on the bolsters on the 2.5 as oposed to black on the 2.0. Alloys are different too. Looks wise, there's not a lot in it The 05 WRX have inverted struts, which I found made the car ride far better than my 03 car. The 05 car has the updated dash and painted calipers. Either way, you'll be on the right track for miles of smiles. Bob

Sti means more insurance, more running costs, plus for the money I want to spend I'm going to be getting an older with car with more miles on the clock.

Perhaps I should have said this is going to be primarily a family car which will only get used for a few thousands miles a year, but it needs to be the sort of motor that my missus can drive to Asda and back once a week and I can play at the weekends for fun, then go on family days out.
Without high end maintenance costs.

I want something less than 5yrs old with good low milage.

I don't need a missile (I have motorbikes if I want outrageous acceleration and top speed), I just want another scooby, but within the limitations set above.

I'd narrowed it down to either the 2.5 or 2.0 WRX or a Civic Type R, but I doubt the Civic will make me as happy as another Impreza.

 

I had the choice of either '05 Civic Type R or 5 door WRX PPP (for the practicality). Same age and roughly the same price, which swung it to the scooby for me. So much car for the money.

 

Thats what I mean and at todays prices you can pick up a nice 06 for less than 8k.

 

I have 06 2.5 wrx and as Dunx said with a de-cat & remap you can get 290bhp & 340lbft torque. With the 2.5 the power is smoother across the rev range and you don't seem to get the kick in the back like with the 2.0.

Whats the cost like for a de-cat and remapping?

The wife is pestering me to buy a BMW sport or a Civic Type R but I want another Impreza. If the remap is cheap enough and a nice 06 is available for the right money I might just have to put my foot down

 

06 wrx is the only way to go, more evolved car and the 2.5 really suites the 5 speed box 40 to 160 in 5th gear blows most cars away when its been had a remap. looks better etc etc

ive got the 2.5L hawkeye. You need to spend £1500/2000 on it; lowering springs, panel filter, exhaust, fuel pump, remap and you've got a very nippy scooby

lowring springs probably the best mod ive done. Not had any understeer since it was lowered, and it does 0-60 in corr blimey and does 0-100 in yikes!

I'll have a good look at that, got my eye on an 05 2.0L for just over 7k or an 06 2.5L for 8k, both WRX.

Going to look next week.
Although the missus is pushing for a BMW or Type R

 

One more thing though...how does the above kit affect reliability?

Are there any downsides to fitting it or is it all good?

 

De-cat & remap shouldn't have any reliability problems at all. As for downsides, depends on backbox, but some can be very LOUD. Upsides, the lovely flat 4 burble , you get more power, better drivability and i got better fuel consumption.

Loud wouldn't be good.
I got told porkies with my last Imprezza a few years ago, I had a new stainless exhaust fitted and told the guy I didn't want anything silly loud.

It was fairly quiet up to about 2500 revs but then went ballistic.
I felt a bit of a prat driving it round town with everyone turning and looking.

I'm 36yrs old and want some fun without looking like I'm having a mid-life crisis

The sccobyworld kit sounds good though, if they can supply a quiet-ish exhaust.

 

This is my car, its still up for sale and next week its going in for a full service, I will also put six months tax on it, all for 8k.

I have to say I'm genuinely surprised at the amount of 06 WRX's for sale at around the 8k mark.
Obviously not much moving and no one wanting to part with cash.

I spoke to a bloke at a garage today with an 06 up for 8k with just under 30,000 miles, he said he was willing to negotiate on the price...its already under the book price, things must be really difficult in the used car market in the UK.

My dads neighbour has an Impreza (an 01 or 02 IIRC) and he took it to a garage to trade in for a normal family saloon just after xmas and the salesman said he didn't particularly want the impreza, said they just weren't selling and recommended he keep it

Looks like I picked a good time to buy.

 

Prodrive backbox's are fairly quiet or Powerstation do a package same as scooby world, but with a Milltek Exhaust which is quieter for £1399
