the oil filter i have got from halfords looks to small for my 1997 2.0 non turbo its only 68mm wide x 60mm the one on my engine looks larger but dont know the size yet halfords have told me this is the right im not to sure it looks to small is there two sizes of filter

 

Yes!
The Subaru filter changed size to a smaller item some years ago! Some after- market filters are still the original size. There's a chance you have the original size filter, fitted. Both work fine.
