Question

I have a '92 Legacy Turbo, and changed the oil last week, and since then there has been a smell of oil in the car when I have the heater on and the car has got up to temperature.

I have checked for any visible leaks (sump plug and filter) but can't see anything.

Has anyone else come accross this problem?

Cheers, James

Had the same thing after a 30k service on my Impreza. they had managed to drip some oil onto the manifold which burnt off slowly.

check for leaks etc but otherwise this is probably the most likely cause.

Red face

Had a couple of leaks on my Impreza from the rocker gasket, the garage thought it was reasonably common on older scoobs given the configuration of a boxer engine.
It may just be dripping down onto the exhaust or heat shield then burning off, if you've left it a few days take it for a 10 minute big blast and then stop and lift the bonnet, you may then get some smoke if its dropping onto the exhaust !!! Mine was only a problem if left more than 2/3 days, I got the gaskets replaced when the engine was out for other work.

Mine (prodrive) does this as well, i got a mate to follow me looking for the tell tale james bond smoke, but nothing, I took it to the garage, but nothing was wrong, although I can definitely still smell oil on a cold morning.....along with Garlic, stale beer etc...!!

I had the same problem on my MY95 sti , I traced the problem down to the rubber washers that go behind the recker cover bolts , they go hard and don`t seal properly . The Subaru part number is 13271AA030 , whhile you replace these you might as well replace the bolts , part no.800706630 . Don't be tempted to try and tighten the bolts as they do snap !!!
Hope this helps Dave
