Before you come to a complete standstill have you tried depressing the pedal on the left fully??

Seriously though my old 205 GTi did exactly the same thing and I replaced all the usual stuff such as Distributor cap, HT leads, Rotor arm etc. Never managed to fix it and it annoyed me so much that I part exchanged it for something else.

Does the Check Engine light come on at all??

 

Idle Speed Controller? Had a problem a couple of weeks back, when the car just sat at 1200RPM and wouldn't go down to its normal idle speed of 800RPM. Check the electrical connections leading from the intercooler. I found that liberal use of WD40 cleared the problem. Might be worth doing a search on this or speaking to someone like Pete Croney who I know has advised on this before.

BTW Joey - If I'd known you when you had a 205GTi, I could have told what your problem (and the cure!!) was (used to have exactly the same on mine)

 

Got on the M1 jn 5 on Friday night and only got as far as the M25 junction 6a until i was stand still. Every time I came to a halt scooby stalled instead of idling around 800 rpm.

Any one got any ideas ?

Sorry to continue to drag this slightly off topic, but I had a 205 1.9 GTi from new and it did the same. We had two 1.6 GTis and they never did it.

After I part exed the 1.9, the Peugeot dealer phoned me and told me it had happened on a test drive and what had I done selling them a lemon!!!! I told them "they all do that".

What caused it then?

So Ro to drag this totaly off topic (but I did post a serious response earlier on )

For the benefit of Barry. There was a small brass screw on the throttle housing. I think it was called the throttle bypass valve, or something similar. I was told by an mechanic mate of mine, that these brass screws became fouled with carbon deposits and for some reason this caused the engine stalling. And you know what? He was absolutely right. Used to take the screw out about once a month, clean it with a wire brush and some WD40 (that stuff again ) and it never stalled again. I believe this screw regulated the air flow and hence the tick over, as you could adjust the idle rate by turning the screw. Don't know if this was the case for all 205's but it certainly worked with the few people I knew who had the same problem.
