Default Crunch into 1st gear

Had a look through this section and cant find anything relative to my problem. When putting car into 1st gear whilst car is still moving (ie rolling upto a junction) it crunches. Only when car is completely stopped or you are really gentle with it 1st gear engages fine. Any ideas? Gearbox oil level has been checked and is okay.

Yeah just never had this with any car before although this is my first subaru i was wandering if this was common with them. Even with the car moving very slowly in first it still does it at times. You do get used to it but its a bit of a pain at times.

Same here, won't even select first until car is practically stationary.
