Since reading a few threads on here regards the DCCD settings on my 2005 STI I recently took it out of AUTO a few times, yesterday I dropped my mate off at his house and as I backed off the drive the car was lurchy and there was banging from the back end, done it again just now as I turned round on our drive.

Am I breaking my car or should it not be happening? Rather than dig out the handbook and read the Subaru stuff I thought i'd ask here first.

if you take it out of auto and leave it on the very bottom green light then it should be fine any other setting and the diff will clunk

I get the same thing with my 2006 Hawkeye STi. When I turn tightly on my gravel drive, I get some funny noises from the diffs and a sort of graunching noise. If I put the diff into the green circle position, then no problems and no noise.

Is this to be expected- is it just the tight turns that the car doesn't like or is there a problem (car is under warranty so if there is a problem then it hopefully shouldn't cost me anything). Maybe it is normal?

front wheels are travelling more than the rears while the centre diff is trying to keep them at the same speed. normal in anything but full green on a classic but i think a newage has a bit of preload in the diff to stop it going to where full green on a classic was (a hedge generally)?

 

I had Carnetix check it out on the service last week, all normal, so my mind at ease.

The dccd is a diff lock which controls the slip between the front and rear axles - take it out of auto and set it and you are progressively tightening the centre diff until all wheels are trying to turn at the same speed

Which means that the outer wheels of the turn have farther to travel than the inner ones and the clonking is the diff unlocking or relocking.

The scrabbling on gravel is also the same thing except that the wheel breaks grip on the loose surface and spins at the same speed as the inner wheel.

That is what they are supposed to do - but I agree, if you are not familiar with the sensation, it can be alarming.

Nothing will break - it is fine.

I use 2 clicks up the green ladder on my 04 car and it seems to be ok with very little crashing and clonking etc., etc.
