Default VF34 turbo

hi there, could anybody tell me how good the vf34 is please? is this the best turbo to have? I believe it has a quicker spool up time?

I have a VF34 on my 03 wrx, the car is making 340bhp after fitting supporting mods. Out on the road the car is frightengly fast and it has it at the top end.
My stepson has a version 1V STI which is faster at the bottem end. The VF34 is an exellent allround performer at my level.

Excellent fast spooling Ball bearing turbo. Good for around 370bhp with supporting mods. I had one on my 6 speed RB5, it was lovely.

Very good turbo. Also look into the VF35, Slightly better spool up, slightly less top end. Both turbos usually produce figures in the 320-350 range, occasionally more with the right supporting mods. VF 35 Can usually be had significantly cheaper than the VF34 My MY99 has 338bhp and 343ft lbs of torque. It shifts, I think it's fair to say!

thank you for your help! do i need a re-map to run a vf34? I have read it is best to fit one just before a re-map otherwise the ECU will not realise it has a larger turbo and run lean causing engine damage. Is this true?

For safe running a re-map is required after most upgrades, best to have a chat with ur tuner. Re-maps are expensive- £600 without licence,£400 with licence and then £100-£200 for tweaks to the map there'in after.

Yes, you will need a remap mate, at best the car won't make anything like it's potential without it, a worst, you'll damage your engine. I run a VF25 conversion on my MY99 and on the drive to the mapper's, the car was as flat as a pancake! After the remap....er, wow!

You'll also want some supporting mods to make the best out of the turbo. I'd suggest

Decat/sports cat exhaust
Ported and wrapped headers
Uprated intercooler STi 8 easiest on new age cars
Uprated fuel pump
550cc injectors
Upgraded turbo hoses
3 port boost solenoid.

Should see you at a comfortable 330ish bhp with similar torque.
