Default gearbox linkage problem my96 manual gears

hi all just had my gearlever go all sloppy after 4th down to 3rd.
been underneath and the selector shaft into gbox pulls back and forth as if it has snapped? and its stuck in 3rd is it possible it has snapped or can it come detatched in the box? i have just looked at one on ebay and just infront of where it enters the box there is a plate with 4 bolts on it,is this access to the selector?and if so can it be done in car or is it a gearbox out job?any and all help welcome thanks.

I assume you were quite forcefull with your gearchange, cos it sounds like you've snapped 3rd/4th selector fork.

The only way forward is a gearbox strip or new/second hand box i'm afraid. There is no way of getting to the problem area without a full strip.
