Mick is the master of STi3/4 head ID. The only other thing (which I think he told me about as well) is there will be a line cast through the L or R on the cam. Having now seen eight different STi3/4 cams myself, this is definitely another clue. I have a set of standard WRX v4 cams and they do not have this extra line.

unbolt a cam and remove a bucket.. if it has a groove and a hole in it then it is hydraulic and therefore early uk/wrx not sti, if the shim is on top of the bucket then they are uk or wrx.. 97/98 heads

im so confused about these heads now as the cams have the extra line on them same as the sti cams but they havent got the under bucket shims
i have a checked the cam on my 97 uk and they only have one line on the cam
and are shims on top so could it be the person i had these off put the sti cams on wrx heads to pas them off as sti
so confused
i also have a set of american rs heads off a 1998 model which are the same as the sti ones that i thought i had bought which got the 2 lines on the cam and have the shims on the top of the buckets
is the rs head like the wrx or sti
my heads gone now so hope someone can shed some light on this subject

I was of the opinion that 97/98 heads either standard or STI had all the same castings, but STI heads were ported a little more for better flow.
The cams are different sti being more aggressive than standard cams.
The shims on STI heads are under buckets and over buckets on standard. This allows for higher revs without spitting out a shim.

I have pictures of sti v4 heads & the shim sits inside the bucket & not on top.

wish i held out that bit longer to see if you would have got back to me as i would have had yours off you
just gutted now
I was pretty stressed myself that weekend. Having finished fitting the engine at midnight it only had to come back out due to some weird noises. So back on the job in the morning, discovered that the cover plate which is fitted to the rear bottom of the block was bent up & caught on the clutch cover?
Eventually got it fixed but by then I was too tired to start stripping the other engine.
Anyway the stiv4 heads are still available & I hope you do get your money back. Its more than likely I will have them for some time.
Good Luck

Looks like you may have a set of STi3/4 cams there even if the rest of the valvetrain is standard WRX. Do you have the IH/EH valves? Depends how much the whole lot cost you, but might be worth hanging onto the cams if they are proper STi (which they look like from the lines). Get a set of measuring calipers and work out the lift on them. I've had two sets of STi3/4 through my hands as well as a standard WRX3/4 set so I know the measurements and signs and it's exactly as Merlin (Mick) says.
As silent running said above - if the valve codes do not match up,then someone has just fitted STi 3/4 cams to the UK/WRX heads - you do run a risk of flicking a shim out of the bucket at high rpm due to the higher lift of the STi cams.

From Left to Right:
STi Ver.2 RA Top Hat Inner Shim
STi Ver.3/4 Inner Shim
UK/WRX Outer Shim 1997/8
UK/WRX/Twin Turbo Outer Shim 1998/02
STi/WRX/UK Selective Bucket

The cams show the signs of being STi. Once you measure them you will be certain. The valves are definitely STi - the exhaust ones are sodium filled. Your tappets and shims are WRX. Whether your valve springs are or not, you may not be able to tell just by colour, but might have to get them out and measure their free length.
