ihi turbo

my mate is needing a new turbo for his 1995 wrx,noticed ihi stamped on it,is the the usual turbo for this model

No, 1995 WRXs had TD05s.

IHI turbos came on some Legacys of the same age and on 1996+ STIs I think.

he has just informed me it is an sti engine fitted,are these not reliable turbos then

The IHI VF series turbo's came on the version 3 sti's onwards.
They are well known for not being as reliable as the TD05 turbo.
Alot of the VF turbo's were ball bearing turbos and had great spool up though
