In light of the recent disscussions on the TMIC/Scoop/Bonnet shape:

I was having a look at the new STi the other day and noticed that on the new larger scoop, inside there is a piece of plastic which directs the air to the front of the intercooler.....as opposed to the old <MY01 where it directed it to the rear.

So what do you think? Does the incomming air when pointed to the front get forced across the depth of the face of the cooler due to there being a limitation on how much air you can force through the the small frontal area that the scoop directs the air to?

Would a scoop splitter not be a more efficient way of getting air to the whole face?

And finally, PeteC, is the Scoop that you're about to sell a replica of the new STi and if so, does it include this "inner scoop"?

It is a splitter just like the ones you can buy/make for the old model.

No, it directs all the air coming in to the front of the intercooler as opposed to "splitting" the air coming in to the front and the rear.....

Their effectiveness has been discussed to death. I'm staying out of any fresh goes at this one as my views are well known.

What amazes me about the STi is that the skirt below the bonnet is the same as the WRX, so not all of the bigger intercooler is actually in the airflow.

Surely its pointless having a bigger intercooler if the extra area isn't cooled.

 

Well I'll have another look tonight as I'm up near my dealer.....

From what I can remember, the whole of the front edge of the STi intercooler seemed to be "available" for airflow but I'll have a better look later.

The new shape (ugly) sti be it my 01 or my02 is the sti 7 to my knowledge.

But then you and I both know my knowledge is not to be trusted unless the book I got it from is certified and licensed by the state, government and monarch.

 

If it was an STi8 it migh p1ss of a lot of people who have just ordered STi7's .

By the time I can afford one it probably will be an STi8. Ho hum.

 

Mind you, calling the thread 'STi 8 scoop' sure did get a lot of views......

OK,OK, I was wrong (no surprise I hear you say )

I had a "close" look last night at an STi 7 ( ), and the insert I was talking about is actually a scoop splitter like wot Pete said.... (damn )

The reason I thought it wasn't was 'cos it's really dark in there ( ) and the splitter is made of black plastic, AND the gap between the top of the splitter and the underside of the scoop is quite small (and I was looking at it inside the garage both times).

If I recall, the Scoop splitters were deemed a waste of time a while back but perhaps, if Subaru have taken it up, there's more value in it than previously thought?

the BG GT-Bs had them std, then the current did not...boy, the back of the IC was dirty, and the rest of it was obviously not getting much air flow. I put one in from ZeroSports and my buttski meter (large and sensitive ) tells me there is "some" benefit.

Not huge hp, but there nevertheless.

I have to agree that the car feels slightly more "urgent" with the splitter but I haven't had a chance to take some meaningful readings (inlet temps) yet which will at least prove that it's doing something (or not)....

If the splitter allows more air to pass through the intercooler per second what does this mean? Does it mean the car can produce more power at the same boost or does it allow the boost to rise slightly to gain more power?

Try not to get too technical with me as it will go straight above me. LOL!

It means the efficiency of the intercooler will rise. Meanign the aircharge will be cooler and therefore more dense. This means that per induction stroke of the engine, more oxygen will be available for burning the fuel. More air = more power.

So increasing the intercooler efficiency will give power increases and the turbo is not part of the equation then? Also then, how does panel filter Induction kits improving their breathing come into this?

Pete,Who said noticeably faster???? I hope you are not taking the pi$$ Mr Corney ( ) "Slightly more urgent" is some way from "Noticably Faster" in my book.....just like an ITG filter doesn't make you car faster or produce more power but improves the Drivability/throttle response so is better without being very quantifiably so ( )

OK, here's my only comment on the subject... and only 'cos you missed it last time

They get dirtier at the back because dirt particles enter with momentum and get thrown to the back. E.G. The dirtiest part of this whole area will be the back of the scoop itself. If dirt deposit = airflow, the air must permeate through the plastic.

Plus... Air will enter the scoop at a far higher rate than it can pass through the intercooler. So the void above the intercooler will be at a raised pressure and this pressure will be equal across the top of the intercooler, from front to back. Again ensuring equal flow.

 

I agree with Pete and I'm a Physicist by Trade, so that means he is right!
