Question Can you drive a car bought with no road tax?

Looking at buying a car, however the road tax has just expired on it, and you need the V5 in the same name as the insurance certificate name to tax it.

So obviously I'll get a V5 probably within 2 weeks (and will then be able to tax it), however whats the deal with driving it in the meantime?

Also I dont believe the owner has declared it as being off the road, so I'm guessing the DVLA will now be chasing as its not been declared as SORN or whatever? And I'm assuming I'll get landed with the fine as the car will be in my name from tomorrow (probably)

Anyone shed any light on any of these issues?!!

You should still have the green tear-off strip with the old v5.

This is what you use to get the tax.

Ah result, I did wonder this actually! But I would still need to wait for my insurance certificate in the post to tax it?

Also regarding driving the car home - can this be done untaxed on the basis that tax will be paid for that month?

Nope. Pass an ANPR and your car will be seized.

I'm in the same boat.

Maybe picking up a car from a trader which will give me V5 but it still leaves me without a insurance cert.

Was told by trader to get roadtax from post office

Tax it at your local VRO (now called a DVLA local office).

Might be worth getting a dated receipt as well so that if there is any query about the untaxed period, you have something that says it wasn't in your posession during that time.

We did something similar when we sold my wifes car, just in case the buyer get a heavy left foot on the way home and my wife got the ticket!
