Default Selling record collection (acid house, house, hip hop, downbeat etc.) advice please

Have no use / space / interest for my old DJ collection any more.

About 9 crates stretching back as far as acid house (rhythm king etc.) through hardcore to US garage and more recently downbeat and hip-hop.

What's my best route to sell these? I have listed them but don't much fancy selling one-by-one although I know I'll get the most money this way.

Anyone done the same? Any tips?

cheers

Ed

I have a collection of original punk singles, albums and bootlegs from the mid 70's and was thinking of trying to put them on eBay as a stock lot. I'd be interested in hearing which way you go with this Ed. A few of mine are:

Sex Pistols - Anarchy in the UK, black sleeve, original EMI release
Johnny and the Self Abusers featuring Simple Mind's Jim Kerr
Geordie -- Don't Do That featuring Brian Johnson of AC/DC, never played

Loads more where that came from...problem is my brother has them in storage back in NI so I'll have to arrange a trip over to collect them before he sells them

Yeah I have some very very rare and sought after stuff, some of which I may keep (like aphex twins first release on my friend from Exeter's own label!)

Might be worthing grouping and e-baying by genre. Agree you might get more dosh by ebaying from than likes of HTFR, but if you don't want the hassle............................

Got any classic breakbeat??

What about these ebay listings agencies you see advertising? Even if they take 20% it may be better than selling as a job lot.

Dont do anywhere near the Ebay agenices - they offer no guarantees of sales, and you'll get FA for them. They charge you for doing something you can easily do yourself.

I sold a load of old rock vinyl for a mate of mine a couple of years ago on Ebay - some of the stuff we thought would go quite well sold for next to nothing, but some of the picture discs and coloured vinyl were getting £60 - £100 each. If we'd listed them as a job lot we would probably have got a few quid, but nowhere near as much as selling them individually.

I imagine with dance stuff then the collectors out there will know what its worth and will bid them up accordingly for the stuff that is worth something. A lot will probably be worthless, but you'll make the money on the rare stuff.

If you take them to one of these shops that buy vinyl, they normally just give a bulk rate of 50p or £1 per record without even looking what they are or knowing if that odd white label 12" is actually worth £100.

Hmm might invest a few hours at the weekend then at least trying to see what some of the classic stuff has sold for in the past.

cheers

Sell them on ebay inidividually and you should make a good amount - the job lots make a tenth what they do when sold separately.

Use Ebay turbo lister which is a small app that lets you set up a template - you then copy that over for each item and upload them to your ebay account - all very easy to use and cuts the time down. Take any artwork from discogs.

I started selling off all my old dance/rave tunes last year. I have over 700 to sell and for the first 100 sold I made £1500 before fees (ebay/paypal). Some tunes sold for £80-90 each!! One sold for £85 and I paid £1 for it back in 92.

Just need to get off my **** and sell the rest now.

Were you setting any minimums or starting at £1?

I tended to start them all off at 99p, no reserve and P&P costs of approx £2.50 to cover average postage charge of £1.50 plus the mailers, fragile tape etc - postage has gone up since then, so maybe £2.80 p&p now.

Tunes worth a lot always have massive bids on them of 10+ users so it doesnt matter that you start them at 99p and it means the ebay fees are lower. Some you win, some you lose but it rarely dropped below £5 for each tune - I was happy with that as that was what I paid for them max back then.

I was doing it at the same time as a mate of mine, and we both started DJing at the same time back in 1990 so we had similar tunes for sale. Every now and then one of us would sell the same tune, I would get £30+ for it, and a few days later he would get only £8 and vice versa so it is variable.

Its also good to end the auctions on say Sunday night - people have been out clubbing at the weekend, and search for some tunes they've heard on Sunday night

Although slightly time consuming to do, its quite a buzz listing all the tunes and then logging in with a few days to go to see that all of them have bids.

I'm going to start doing mine again soon and get the rest of my stuff done.

A lot of collectors seem to look on Ebay for are vinyl stuff, so dont worry about starting it at 99p with no reserve - cheaper to list, and if it only sells for 99p, thats all it was worth ! The stuff that is worth more will get bid up by the collectors if you just leave them to it.

You can get good mailers from ebay as well to send the vinyl out in. Cant remember the chaps name that sells them though.

I skipped about 2 thousand 12 inch promos some 6 mths ago
tried time after time to sell them on ebay
serious djs now use mp3, cdr and ableton exclusively
the market for vinyl is shrinking, and is just collectors only
best of luck selling them though

Put them on for 10 days as it doesnt cost any more. The important thing is when they end - fri, sat and sun from around 8pm onwards are the best times.

You can schedule the start time in the listing ( costs about 6p extra ) so you can make them all end when you want them to.

Good point from Mike - I always spaced my auctions out by about 10 mins each to allow people bidding on record 1 to win it and then bid on record 2, 3, etc so they dont all end at the same time.
