I must be lucky.

I drive a black Scooby Turbo with gold alloys, I am 21, always get ID into pubs and clubs, but have never been stopped by the fuzz. Had a few strange looks, but thats about it. Except for all the boy racers trying to race me.

Obviously they think its a non-turbo kitted up!

There again the bad thing is that the fuzz must look at the cars records and see that it is registered to a 21 year old. So if it gets nicked for a joy ride, Im f*cked.

They were probably doing a check on your number plate whilst being in prime position to pull/chase you if need be.

If that's the case, then great - if my car ever gets nicked!

They're also probably jealous too

They are the Police, they can do anything they want!

Plus crime is obviously so low in this country now they have nothing better to do

Had exactly the same in Leamington - picked my wife up from the Hospital in Warwick where she'd just finished the saturday late shift in A&E so it was 2am. Travelled out of Leamington towards Radford passed a T5 heading into town which did a big "U"ey (sp?!) and followed right up our ****. As soon as we hit the 40mph I went up to 40 and he sat so close that we couldn't see his headlights. After about 1 minute he just turned off. As said earler - just doing a PNC. Next day my wife told the coppers who used to come into A&E with chips for them at night (so they're not all bad!) and they all said that they'd have pulled us over.

I'd far rather they at least did PNC's and stop checks if it even put off one ****** from breaking into my house, nicking my keys and trashing my car.

cheers
Andy

Have you checked your bulbs recently ?

More seriously, I wouldn't care about this sort of attention.

Perhaps a car matching your description has been nicked recently, so every time you pass the police they run a check?

You're doing nothiing wrong; don't sweat it and be a little re-assured that someone's looking out for the cars! But I can imagine that it could get annoying.

Do you have any pictures of your spoiler. I fancy changing my basic UK spoiler to something a little bit "in your face".

Where did you get it from?

thanks for the comments guys... I realise that they are just 'doing the job' but they make it so damn obvious.

The odd thing is one thing changes on the car (i.e. wing!) and that's it, it has now become a police magnet

Mattski,

And the moral of the story is ..... when you put a sodding great 'look-at-me' wing on the back of your car, people will look. Not always the people you want to look though!

Me? I hate spoilers/skirts/gold wheels etc, mainly cos of the unwanted police attention, and the fact that every nutter wants to race you.

heheh don't start me off on the gold wheels argument

I think that spoilers etc are fine as long as they are tasteful... i.e. not like that bloody horrible impreza the japs made.

Had my MY00 (with gold wheels! ) for over a year now and never once had any trouble with the police taking an interest. As for Koni-equipped Cavaliers...

Unhappy

I got pulled recently when visiting my brother in Bracknell. Just a quick look at the photo ID driving license was enough for the copper. As a parting comment he told me that if I drove in Bracknell - "expect to get stopped by every Police car you see". Apparently the thefts of Scoobies for armed robberies, ram raids, and "joy"riding have reached epidemic proportions there. It isn't that much better in Farnborough either. I'm quite happy to be pulled over for checks - it's much less hassle than an insurance claim.

Dave,

Yep, they really did say that. Got a similar line from a Hampshire copper who pulled me in Farnborough a few weeks ago for a routine check - "we are having a real problem with these [Impreza's] at the moment".

As an aside, photo ID driving licenses seem to be worth getting. Twice I've shown mine to the Police and it's saved me (and them) lots of time. I'm sure it saved me the hassle of a producer as well. You can get them by filling out the relevant forms and showing your passport at the PO, instead of sending it through the post like I had to.

Jerome.

Hellooo,

I have managed to wheel-and-deal a new spoiler onto the back of my car, it is an 'Evo' spoiler and sets the car off perfectly imho

However... In the last three days I have had 4 police cars follow me, here is what happened.

Night of installation in Leamington a Volvo T5 followed me and pulled me over. He just pulled up to the side and said "have you just nicked it?". I replied with "erm, I don't think so" to which he replied "why don't you get the driving lamp conversion?"!
and pulled away... twilight zone or what!

Same night in Coventry panda car made it very obvious they where following me, for ages too, until I pulled into a garage.

Next night in Rugby cop car deliberately turned around and came right up behind me, like really close, and followed me for a bit. He then flashed his lights and started to pull me but then simply drove past

Same night another panda in coventry followed me for about 3 miles, finally overtaking and giving me a dirty look

So... what gives? Does a rear spoiler make me that much more fun to follow or what? Do I look guilty? Are they bored? Do they want me to plant my right foot?

For a bench mark figure....
I'm 21 got 4 yrs no claims and 6 points (sp30 and sp60) drive a my97 turbo wagon with 16" speedlines
First quote £2500
Second £ 1600
Paying now £ 1050 Fc
Nearly as cheap as my VW Golf Driver 1600 !!! insurance was 3 yrs ago
I'm chuffed with it I dont know if anyone else can beat it?

Have you not changed the appearence of your car to attract looks or was it for the increased downforce ( I dont think so). You obviously havnt read the thread about Lord Lucan having his WRX nicked. If you make your car look like a super dooper Sti then they are more nickable than a humble 5 door and yes you will attract attention..... of all sorts !

Indeed it is for looks. I have great sympathy for those who have had a car stolen, the people responsible are scum. However, the other side of the coin says why the hell shouldn't I do what I want because of those a**holes?

If people are worried about an Impreza being stolen because it may look a bit more 'super' then I would argue that they should have seriously thought about buying it in the first place.

Are you suggesting that I(we) don't make my car(s) how I(we) want? The thing is, I bought the car because I love it, I want it to be how *I* want, gold wheels n all

Of course I've taken sensible 'precautions' (i.e. > £1100 on security alone) and I know that if they want it they will get it but they are going to have to fight for it.

It's kinda like saying dont drive, you might have a crash!

I'm off me soap box now and do agree 100% with your argument kris but I'm not stopping living for those tossers.

Well.. taking the moral high ground here..

Sure.. it's a little unsettling to be stopped by the police, but you'd be glad if it were your car stolen and the police pulled the tea-leaf over.

Let's face it.. Subarus are well known for being nicked in the Midlands (and elsewhere for that matter) and if you're driving "apace" in a be-spoilered car then it's not unreasonable for the copper to think you're a more likely suspect.

As my Dad always instilled in me, "If you're not doing anything wrong. You've got nothing to worry about"

I am paying around £1200 a year with the Privilege. I got it just before I was 21 and have now got 4 years NCD and 3 points for speeding (last car). I took Pass Plus driving just after I passed my test, and this saves me £500 a year, and was a peace of **** to take. 6 hours extra driving, with no test.

Agree with much of the above. The police are welcome to spot check me any time. The only thing that concerns me is that for the two years I have had my STI (with high wing) I have never been pulled over.

Mind you, if someone did still my car they would stick out like a sore thumb. It is the only red STI in the whole area (sounds like STI's do). But would they be able to be caught?

No, its Black, Gold Alloys and P Reg.
Soon to have a 4" exhaust fitted

Looks stange as '97 was the only year Subaru fitted 15" Alloys - Will be changing them next year for 17".

mattski:
Been out and about in LS flauntin me spoiler, even got nods and smiles from the "Festive Force" directing traffic at the Warwick Castle Carol Service

Maybe they thought I was Santa.

But the night was spolied as we just missed a couple of ba$tard$ torching an Astra in the lanes near Milton Semele(?) They took off, no lights so no reg, as we approached. By the time we'd turned in the lane they were gone

What a bummer, must be the closest you could get to having a cop jump in and shout follow that car. Don't know how the Scoob would have performed four up against your pal in the T5

Anyway there's obviously a problem in suburbia, so don't get on the constabulary's case. Your wheels could make the next mobile bonfire!
