Default gearbox + clutch question

I need some advice.

In short, I've got a 2003 UK WRX with a bit of uprated power and now the standard clutch doesn't want to play for more than a couple of minutes before smelling something awful etc, so I think I'll need to replace my clutch with something better.

Here's the problem:

I'm thinking I'll have to replace my gearbox sooner or later, and I'm not sure if I'll be going for a PPG 5sp kit when it does or just a new age STI box. Are clutches compatible between the STI and the 5sp PPG boxes, or will I have to fork out for a clutch twice if I get a 6sp?

At the moment I'm somewhat broke'ish so I don't want to replace the box just yet, but I'd really like to replace the clutch at some point. Somewhere down the line I'll also probably be going for a 2.5 block with a 20g, so the clutch should be able to handle 400+ lbft comfortably.

Any comments?

I'd give Lateral or API a call to discuss, but unfortunately I'm not in a position to buy the clutch just yet so don't want to waste their time

Lots, but give David a call at Welcome to the API website and he can give you very precise ideas and costs.

Basically the 5 speed clutch will fit onto a 6 speed box, but not the other way round.

So if you buy a clutch for the 5 speed, it'll fit if you decide on the 6 speed box at a later date.

Also, if you decide to hold out and buy a 6 speed clutch with the 6 sp box, you'll have to also buy the 6sp flywheel too.

Aha, cool

Are 6sp clutches generally stronger than 5sp ones, or does the size increase not matter?

I would have thought an AP organic 6speed clutch would handle more torque than its 5 speed equivalent, but don't hold me to that
