Anyone have any experience of owning/driving for work a Mitsubishi L200?

What are service intervals and costs, known problems etc?

old man has a 4work 1.5 cab thing, turbo diesel. the engine is a little gutless and he says that off road it is put it in 4wd or nothing (his previous hilux would get a lot further in 2wd). his is used as much off road as on and he got chunky tyres put on from factory.

the nirvara was a lot more grunty and the cab in the nissan was more car like than the l200 but was a lot more pricey.

seems reliable and is fairly well built.

 

Ive had a drive in an animal and i thought that was pretty car like, for a truck anyway! Was quick enough, again for a pickup!

Im not after a get away car so not too fussed about power.

 

For commercial use the service intervals are way too small.

Some older (53 plate) trucks suffer from head failure around the 40k mark. If looking at one from that year, be sure its either done a shed load of miles or has had its engine rebuilt already.

The new shapes are pretty good IMO, I brought an Animal last year and have done 18k in it. 1st service was £199, second will be £499. (Some dealers will charge a load more though, be careful)

Fuel consumption on the new ones isn't that bad (Came from a Subaru mind, so anything is pretty bloody good!) The older shapes are a fair bit juicier.

I compared it with a Nissan whilst deciding... I did less than 2 miles on the test drive with the Nissan before asking the way back to the showroom.

Mitsi customer service can be hard work though. They will look for any reason to not honour their warranty. Whereas Nissan (from what a customers experience has been) will just blame you for braking a gearbox in the 1st 3 weeks of ownership.

What should you buy?? The one your prefer to drive..

(Never considered the Toyota as the only one round here has "Intimidator" written down the side and is driven by a right weedy looking bloke. Laugh?.. Everytime I see it. )

 

I didnt know about the head failure. The one ive driven has done 35k, so now im a bit wary about that one!

Seen another one with 54k and thats had a new engine done by Mitsi, so maybe thats a better one to go for.

I have been looking for low mileage ones but from what you've said, maybe one with a bit of mileage on may be a good idea.

Pretty greedy on fuel when compared to something like a Nivaro van. Other than the extra seat I'm not sure I know of another reason to buy one instead of a good van.

 

Depends what site he needs to get on.

If it was purely for commercial use then the Ford Ranger/Mazda BT50 has a higher load capacity and higher towing capacity, the new 2.5TDCi isn't shabby either.

If it's more a lifestyle thing then the new L200 isn't half bad, the new one gets some much needed power and the Shoguns 4X4 system. The old one was pants.

If road tax is an issue, the 2.5 Hilux falls into band F, just about everything else is band G.

i have had a few 4x4 pickups,

the best is the isuzu, just not as trendy as the L200 or others
isuzu is rated higher in africa ,ireland and most of europe over even the hilux, old isuzu's are being bought up for export now!!
L200's i've had have all done near 150000miles no problem, on the road they don't roll all over in the bends and carry the weight well, the down side is very little suspension travel offroad, which shows
the other thing with L200, hilux, nivara and ranger is rear legroom
the isuzu is 8/9" longer wheel base so 4/5 adults can sit in comfort
ford rangers burn fuel like a 500bhp impreza
i use a 2002 isuzu 2.5tdi pickup now, 90000miles, cruises at 80mph, averages 25/30mpg, carries 4men easily, and the rear bed will fit 3 motorbikes(tailgate down)
being a bit lower than L200/hilux, loading is much better

if your after the new models i'd take a good look at the isuzu rodeo,

I've got 3 friends with old shape L200's, all of them have done well over 100k miles without issue.

I found the L200 a bit too cramped and I hate the new shape so I test drove a Navara, Hilux and Rodeo.

Navara was best all rounder with good engine, nice interior and good looking.
Hilux looks the part, but basic inside and again too cramped for me to drive.
Rodeo has been facelifted, new engine and looks the part.

I brought the Rodeo Max LE for £19k +vat and have found it faultless so far, it could do with a 6 speed box like the Nissan, but otherwise I'm very happy.

Plus you'll get more p/x money for your Subaru (if you have one) if you chop it in to an Isuzu/Subaru dealer.

Hadnt considered the Navara or Hilux as the newer ones are out of my budget. Had a look round a Rodeo and it didnt seem as nice inside. Never drove it though.
