Honda is meant to be the best for reliability - but I would have the Clio as it is the best all round package. The beauty of a hot hatch is it is cheap, the clio is frugal and fun IMO.
wat about the cupra r,
looks amazing,
5 doors = practicle
reliable
and not too many of them about.
defo go for that or of course the amazin and truely under estimated gsi, underground and low key.......love it
granted the type r is nice, however the ride is very hard!!!!!
this is why its between th leon and gsi for me!!!!!!
i am becoming very keen on the cupra r's!!!

voted type-r though the Leon is a very close second.
Ditto.
I was put off French cars many years ago and will probably never have another. My parents have got 2, one new and one about 10 years old. My opinion on them hasn't changed.
Just don't buy French unless it has a warranty, they fall to bits!
I would say CTR, had two of the first uk models and they were awesome, ride is stiff but not as bad as stated, besides these are performance cars so this is expected.
Agree with Matt & WRX287 on the R32, brilliant cars but I am guessing that your budget may not suit as they still fetch £15 - 16k for a good, low milage example, they are also expensive to repair, so if money is tight keep away.
CTR's are cheaper now and reliable as hell, haven't heard of anyone having major engine trauma which is incredible given most of them spend 8hrs a day at 7000rpm. They have the best transmissions on the market outside of a porsche.
As a general rule you can't go wrong with Japanese or German.
If he doesn't mind a car that needs to be reved hard to get the best from it then the CTR is a good choice. If you want more power and torque at lower revs then I would go for the Astra turbo or Seat Cupra R. Hope this helps
