Default Beater problem - Audi 100 - thermostat?

Me old L plate Audi 100 has been playing up for a while.

Its using a lot of fuel and hesitates under normal driving (not wot)

I did suspect the labmda but ive noticed the oil and water gauges barely move, meaning the car isnt getting upto temp.

Is that most likely to be the thermostat stuck, or is there anything else that would influence this?

Finally, where does it live?

When my temp gauges on my astra stopped working and heater stopped it was the head gasket. It destroyed cylinder head and left me with a £1,200 bill so Id hope its not that but would recommend not driving until youve had it checked.

Sound a lot more like the MAF (Air Flow Meter). 2 classic characterisicts for that fault, especially the excess fule usage. Located on the air intake pipe from the front of the car.

Thanks both.

Shall bear that in mind Si

I gave the MAF a clean. It does sound like that from the jerkiness, but im used to failing MAF sensors using less fuel as they tend to under read.

Feels more like a lambda failure in that respect.

Neither explain the oil and water getting upto temp.

The thermostat will be stuck in the full open position. Car will never warm up and because its running on 'choke' all the time, it will use more fuel and be a bit rough.
